2. Sourdough pancakes!! Totally make these this week. My sourdough starter is still going strong.

3. Have you started holiday shopping yet? I actually have, which is super early for me. My gift guides will be coming in a few weeks! I think this is my tenth year for them!

4. So some exciting news – we are in the process of building of house. Do you want a home series on this? IG stories, blogs? What is one dream thing you wish you could have in your house?

5. Barefoot in quarantine. I love.

6. TV things!! Okay, who watched The West Wing reboot? I watched it and was thrilled, obviously, to see the cast back together. I was disappointed that it was a remake of a previous episode though? I thought we were getting a flash forward!

7. UMMM also, did you see that Dexter is coming back?! Insanity. Pretty sure I documented my Dexter binge watching on Tuesday Things a decade ago.

8. 10 things to do when you’re feeling unproductive.

9. I finished Mariah Carey’s memoir and it was so incredible that I had to tell you about it before my month end reading post. OMG. I might deem it the best book I read all YEAR. Yes. Make sure you listen to it, because she narrates it.

Lovely week here for #42!

Max had the day off from school on Monday, so I took the kids to triple b farms. They had so much fun!

We literally got lost in the corn maze. I’m not even kidding! Did not think we would find our way out at all.

Even though the events were outside, masks were still required. It was pretty crowded, but easy to distance and my kids love their masks.

I had to make them take them off for this one… ha!

Why are they so big?!

We went on the hayride…

And finished with apple cider donuts!

It was SO fun. Monday is always an insane work day for me but I basically played hooky and we went last minute.

Hmmm what else. I made my tomato soup this past week!

And I made Eddie chicken parm… one of his favorite meals ever.

Emilia wanted to be hidden inside a pillow and blanket fort.

And she has so much fun playing in and collecting leaves.

We made sugar cookies!

I can’t frost to save my life but they were good.

The leaves are the most gorgeous they have been in years!

My mom and I ventured to homegoods and at home. Cutest gingerbread stuff ever.

Promise I’ll stop with the pumpkin spam soon! How was your week?!

2. Oh my word – cookie dough stuffed brownies.

3. Does anyone else thing the leaves look outrageously gorgeous this year?! I’m ready to do a fall leaf project with my kids like I did back in first grade.

4. When your task list is overwhelmingly long. I LOVE this. I get overwhelmed really easily, especially when it comes to to-do lists.

5. TV things!! Haven’t watched much of anything this week (a little DWTS here and there – is anyone else watching?) but can I just say that the previews for the show Emergency Call are basically my worst nightmare? Why would anyone want to watch that! I cannot.

6. There’s never been a story like Britney Spears. Can’t stop reading this.

7. Speaking of the above, I’m listening to Mariah Carey’s new memoir on audible and it’s incredible because she narrates it. And she sings in basically every chapter.

8. Thinking of staying at home all winter has me wanting to take up skiing. Even though it terrifies me! Just give me the cozy cabin with twinkle lights and snow.

9. I’m also definitely already thinking about christmas decor. Might bite the bullet Nov 1.

10. I love reading quarantine routines and this one has lots of good tips.

Our favorite tree that we see everyday is starting to lose its leaves and I’m so sad! It’s gorgeous.

My little dish washing helper. I love it.

Looking through the lakeshore learning catalogue. I can’t even handle them!

Did you even get your car washed if you didn’t take a photo like this during it?

Halloween cookie decorating!

And haircut time for Max. This was only his second hair cut of the entire year!

We went to trax again. It’s my favorite place.

Hers too!

They have apple cider slushies too.

Still grilling our favorite veggies.

This is pumpkin cream gnocchi from DiAnoias. Served in actual pumpkin! We celebrated our wedding anniversary over the weekend and this was basically our dinner. Ha.

And these.

Went on a drive-through hayride with cousins! It was so fun.

Outside my brother’s house… gorgeous.

Pizza the size of his face after hockey.

And I made a batch of my bolognese for sunday dinner! We had it with banza pasta, sourdough, salad – it was perfection.

1. Have you seen the meme: I’m physically in October but mentally still processing March?! OMG that is spot on.

2. Remember last week when I talked about the cricket in my car? Well. Now our entire neighborhood has tons of crane flies, which basically look like enormous mosquitos and they dive bomb us the minute we step outside. As you can imagine, I’m not being dramatic about it at all.

3. Chocolate matcha sticky buns! I need these.

4. TV things!! Did anyone else watch Emily in Paris? I watched the entire thing and was… sort of underwhelmed. It felt really young/fake to me, but at the same time I am so desperate for normal TV and movies to come back! I wanted to love it, and I did like it, but it just didn’t… freak out over it. Thoughts?

5. What are you reading? SO EXCITED because Elin’s new book is out today!! Eeeep!

6. Thoughts on planning 2021 vacations? Would you do it?

7. How to keep a simple home with kids. Love love love this.

8. Is it too early to put up the christmas tree? Asking for a friend.

40 weeks of 2020!

We started the week with this gorgeous view on Monday morning! I see this tree everyday taking Max to school. I love it.

Made a batch and steel cut oats for the week and stirred in pumpkin butter.

It was a gorgeous week, weather wise.

Homework and coloring for everyone.

Takeout arugula parm salad. This was SO good, minus the rather aggressive chunks of onion.

We went to a local farm with some friends and had the place to ourselves for a bit.

The sunglasses + mask situation is a constant battle on my face.

Best sight.

These colors too.

We’ve been enjoying a ridiculous amount of apples around here.

And we all got our flu shots!

Autumn skies are the prettiest, right?! With the crazy dramatic clouds and all the colors.

Spent some time in our old halloween costumes. In case you need a flashback.

Took a little autumn drive too!

In some places, the color was incredible, but for the most part it’s still pretty green.

This makes me want to live in the forest.

I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH!

Chicken tacos for dinner!

And on to the next week.

what I read in september 2020

I had a great reading month! Not a lot of books, but really GOOD books. Really enjoyed everything on the list this month!

While I’m keeping my reviews here on the blog, remember that you can follow the goodreads account with what I’m reading, so you can see what I read in real time.

You can also join the book club! We have the instagram and secret facebook group here.

You can find my reading lists here and previous What I Read posts here. I’d love to hear below what you read this month!

What I Read In September 2020

One To Watch – 5 stars

This was our September book club pick and I loved it. The story follows a fashion blogger who ends up on a Bachelor-esque dating show. It’s super cute and no where near as cheesy as it sounds. There is actually some depth to this book even though it is an enjoyable light read. If you’ve ever been in a relationship that you just can’t get away from, you will relate to this. It’s a good one.

Transcendent Kingdom – 5 stars

Just finished this one late last night and also loved it. This is a more serious read than what I usually find myself with, but I ended up enjoying it so much, as heartbreaking as parts are. The story follows a student who is studying behavior in mice, trying to make sense of the addition issues that plague her family. I LOVED this writing. I also loved the struggle between science and faith (and could relate to that too). This book is sad and heartbreaking, but at the same time, so good I couldn’t stop reading.

The Roommate – 3.5 stars

Complete change of pace from the above! The story follows two strangers who are complete opposites (one is sort of awkward, one is um, a… film star.. of sorts! ha!) and end up living together. I love an opposites attract story! This was a light, easy and fun read – and definitely on the steamy side. I really liked it and it was nice to get lost in something sort of mind numbingly easy for a few days!

The Heir Affair – 4 Stars

Oooh I was so excited about this! This is the sequel to The Royal We which I loved so much! It’s considered royal fan-fiction and I mean, who can say no to that? I did enjoy this but ddn’t love it anywhere near as much as The Royal We. I also read that so long ago that I found myself having to go back and kind of re-read parts of it (which was fun!). I think it’s crazy how much as happened in the actual royal family between the first book and the second. If you loved The Royal We, you”ll enjoy this. As a note, you should read The Royal We first!

And it’s October! 6 months of our book club going strong! Here’s our October book pick…

We will be reading Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. I absolutely LOVE his books and am so excited to read this one along with you.

Here’s the scoop: Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue.

We will discuss the book in our secret facebook group the last week of October – date to come! Follow jessica’s book club on IG and facebook for details throughout the month, and to see what else I’m reading. xo

Here’s a peek at everything I loved in September 2020! xo

FOOD

My pumpkin pie steel cut oats. This has been breakfast on repeat. I make a batch at the start of the week and reheat a portion each day. Absolutely love them!

Fannie May S’mores snack mix. Oh my. This is completely addictive – once you start, it’s all over. Crunchy grahams and marshmallows covered in milk chocolate. Everyone freaks over this.

Leinenkugel Harvest Patch Shandy. I’m not a huge beer lover, but I can’t pass up a good pumpkin beer with a cinnamon sugar rim! This has easily taken the #1 spot for me. My definitely favorite!

FASHION

Athleta Made to Move Mask. I love the regular Athleta masks but got these last month and they are wonderful!! I don’t use them to work out since I’m just in my house, but I actually prefer these ones over others when I have to go out. I also love that these come with the elastic band to go around the back of your head if needed!

Via Spiga Packable Hooded Raincoat. This was a Nordstrom anniversary sale purchase and I am in love. It is SO lightweight (would be incredible for travel, whenever that can happen again) and is super cute. The best part is that it has a big hood! And it’s not just for rain – I’ve worn in while taking Max to school because the mornings are getting chilly. It’s great for cool weather.

Moonlight Lace Pajamas. It’s no secret that I am OBSESSED with the nordstrom line of pajamas. They have been a huge staple since I had Max. They are so soft and stretchy. This is a new version and I love it because of the short sleeves but also – no buttons. So comfy. I could LIVE in these!

Vionic Relax Slipper. Okay this is apparently the year of the slipper for me, but who is surprised. Last month I hurt my foot and needed to have support at all times in the kitchen. I wear shoes when working but a friend recommended these to me for cooking dinner, etc and I may never go back. They are pricey, but I have never had such a supportive slipper. They are incredibly comfortable. They aren’t that cute, but they are worth it. P.S. I have the black ones and they constantly sell out but come back in stock.

MEDIA

One To Watch. This was our September book club pick and it was SO GOOD. I highly recommend this book! Light and fun but also had a lot of depth. I was hooked in the first few pages.

Friday Night Lights. I can’t believe it took me until now to watch this entire series and I adored it. Adored!

Keith Urban The Speed of Now. This might sound weird but I really don’t listen to country music unless it’s in the summer. But!! 2020 has changed that and I love Keith Urban’s new album!! The song with P!nk called One Too Many is so good.

Podcasts! Here are a few of my favorite episodes from this month: Day 7 on Armchair Expert (this is so emotional and so good. I love Dax.), Harry and Meghan Finding Freedom on Be There in 5 (love this discussion with Merritt Beck!), Venita Aspen on Bad On Paper (if you don’t follow Venita, you must!), and On My Mind on Unlocking Us.

HOME

Swell Calcatta Gold Insulated Tumbler. I didn’t think I’d be a travel mug coffee kind of person, but sometimes I haven’t finished it by the time I leave to take Max. This is the perfect size – I can do hot or iced coffee in here and it stays great. I can also fit a straw through the top lid.

Mackenzie Childs Spooky Pumpkins. Pretty sure I have mentioned these every year, but they are by far my favorite piece of fall decor. First, I love that they aren’t orange, second, I love that they are perfect for Halloween but then can be turned around for Thanksgiving

Homesick Pumpkin Patch Candle. I did a post earlier this month on my favorite candles and have since gone through this one. I LOVED it. It is a such a nice pumpkin scent with just a hint of spice and not much sweet. I can’t find this exact one in stock online, but they have a very similar one called pumpkin picking!

Gold Cookie Sheet 3 Pack. I use these sheet pans every single day (sometimes multiple times a day) and use all sizes. They are great quality for the price!

KIDS

Yum Box. We’ve entered the world of lunch boxes this year and I bought a few to try out. This is our favorite – it’s so easy for Max to open, I love the segments, it’s light weight and it can go in the dishwasher. Max loves it too.

Straw Constructor Building Toys. This toy has been an absolute HIT with the kids. It’s fantastic for both ages and they’ve had a lot of fun building together too. I love that so much can be done with it, but then it also packs up nicely.

1000 Things That Go. My kids love this book (along with the food one too!) and get lost in it. Max loves to go over every.single.thing in the book – it’s so cute! I feel like they have also learned so much from these too.

Magnatiles. We’ve had magnatiles since Max was two, and he enjoyed them for years. He still does! But now, Emilia has discovered them and she is obsessed. It’s so cute. She is constantly building “doggy houses” and builds everywhere! These are such a toy that lasts and lasts.

5. TV things! I finished Friday Night Lights. I am now in a major depression that it is over. I don’t know how I feel about the ending – ugh! I’m definitely in a show hangover and not sure what to binge next.

6. Speaking of TV, did you watch the Father of the Bride 3 special? I was so, so excited for it. I thought it was cute but ultimately it wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for. Still absolutely love this article by Nancy Meyers. (NYT)
