2. Citrus cupcakes with blood orange buttercream! HELLO!

3. Last week I walked into Max’s room and he and Emilia were sitting on his bed and he was reading her a book. I just about had a heart explosion!

4. How to do the thing you’re avoiding. Um story of my life.

5. TV things!! Not much to report though I’m considering watching Night Stalker on netflix which would most likely be the worst decision of my life since I loathe anything scary and would have nightmares forever. Have you watched it?! I’ve pretty much never been so desperate to go to a movie theater in my life too. I know you can rent them some places but up until recently even that was closed for us with local restrictions.

6. Anyone else having a hard time feeling positive about spring and summer (and everything after)? Praying for normal life to resume soon. When I look back on what we were doing last year at this time, my mind is blown.

7. Love reading about beauty products people can’t live without. There are many of these I’ve never tried!

8. I had an amazing reading weekend (it’s when I get most of my binge-reading done, haha!) and I just finished how to fail at flirting. It was such a cute and quick read – light, fun and exactly what I needed at this time.

Who else is secretly excited that January is half over?!

This past week I finally felt like I was back in the groove, you know? Only took half the month!

Finally took down the christmas stuff last week! Man, it was hard! I was so sad once it was all down. I think it’s because I’m basically afraid to live through 2021 to get to christmas again. Ha!

Mornings! Winter skies are so pretty.

Some roasted veg with balsamic vinegar going into orzo.

Can’t handle her!

The driveway totally looked like leopard print one morning. Also this time of year I live in my black uggs.

This could be a problem!!

My house salad with crispy chicken fingers for dinner one night.

Little love bug! Why is he so big.

A gigantic pretzel starter seemed reasonable with our takeout one night.

Also been roasted some garlic balsamic mushrooms as a side! They are so good.

Annnd I made chrissy teigen’s drunken noodles one night. We love this meal but it is a bit time consuming.

Finally we did a bit of valentine’s day decorating. FUN FUN FUN!

3. For the last two months, every night before bed, we belt out jingle bells while the kids have a dance party. We usually sing it 11 or 12 times. I’m trying to figure out how long we can keep this song going into the new year!

4. Things to stop (and start!) doing in 2021.

5. TV things! I watched This Is Us last week and maybe I’m just desperate for some good TV, but I thought it was pretty good – just wish it would move quicker! I’m also kind of watching The Bachelor (background watching, haha) since it was filmed locally.

6. Speaking of, thoughts on the SATC reboot? I mean, I am the biggest SATC fan of life, I could watch it all day and night. But I just have a hard time believing it will be good! I got everything I needed with the movies so… thoughts?

7. This new year is a beautiful fresh start.

8. Late at night I look at dreamy, wild real estate for places I’d love to live. Where is your go-to spot?

9. This weekend I read the wife upstairs in about a day – it was so good and I was hooked! What are you reading?

The kids had their well checks! I live for Emilia’s outfit.

And on that same note Max got to celebrate his birthday in school! They were closed on his actual birthday.

Fresh sourdough! I didn’t bake it, but my starter is still going strong.

Donuts for the weekend.

Starting a batch of egg salad for the week. My fave.

And finished with pizzas and salads! This greek salad doesn’t look like much but it may have been the best I’ve ever had. Have a great week!

5. 5 changes to make this year happier than last. May not take much with last year being 2020, but still…

6. Where is the first place you’ll travel to when it’s safe to do so?!

7. TV things! I finished Bridgeton and mostly liked it, though I thought parts were ridiculous at times. I’m basically just rewatching Schitt’s Creek at night or reading because there.is.nothing.on.

8. On working less – this is so interesting!

9. Christmas decor is still up in this house! Can’t say no to the lights. Verrrry excited to do a little valentine’s decorating though.

Annnd we’re back at the start of a new year!

I am so excited to share this weekly post again! Never would I have ever expected what was to come of 2020. Now I looked back on those first three months of the year when life was “normal” and it’s crazy to see. I always love seeing what we did throughout the year, and seeing how much the kids grew (sob!). Hoping to keep it up again all this year!

Max got a spirograph for Christmas! It’s definitely a learning curve for him but he loves it.

He was obsessed with making muffins this week. He chose pumpkin! Oh my gosh, these might be the best pumpkin muffins I have EVER! made. Want to share the recipe but pumpkin season is basically over. Do I want until next year?!

I mean we had to add chocolate chips…

Had a few warmer days so had to break out the new chalk from santa.

I mean how fun is pizza chalk?!

Took a quick run to target and was happy to see some Valentine’s Day stuff out!

Lacy brought the kids treats when we exchanged gifts with baby Cooper!

We sat in front of grandma’s tree for a bit.

On NYE I made this insane hot lobster dip. Dying to share this recipe too!!

Also made some sheet pan nachos, which has kind of become our NYE go-to.

And pork on New Year’s Day. Bring us all the good luck possible!

Pretty amazing when your older brother helps you build your Frozen legos!

Lots of fun playing with Christmas gifts all week.

And hot chocolate breaks!

We got the best pizza this weekend to finish things off.

I’m super sad the holidays are over but also ready to get into the swing of things. Why does it always go so fast?! Even still, I’m happy to get a move on this week and get back into our routine!

what i read in december 2020

This was a great reading month! I managed to JUST hit my reading goal for 2020 of 75 books. While I didn’t read any knockouts this month, I really liked most of what I read.

Now that I’ve shared that I’m pregnant, I can share that it’s the reason I was able to hit my goal! When I was pregnant with Emilia, reading was one of the only things I could do to distract myself from the nausea. Same went for this time too. I also have had major pregnancy insomnia, so I’ve read a ton at night. There have been many nights where I’ve been awake from 12-5 or 3-7, so I just read! Almost a blessing in disguise because I don’t know if I would have hit my 2020 reading goal during these busy months.

While I’m keeping my reviews here on the blog, remember that you can follow the goodreads account with what I’m reading, so you can see what I read in real time.

You can also join the book club! We have the instagram and secret facebook group here.

You can find my reading lists here and previous What I Read posts here. I’d love to hear below what you read this month!

What I Read in December 2020

Christmas At The Island Hotel – 3 stars

I downloaded this on a whim when I was dying for more Christmas books. The story follows a family who is getting their new hotel ready for the holiday season. I LOVED the setting here – on an island between Scotland and Norway. Wish I could be there right now! I did like a lot of the characters at the hotel but ultimately I just couldn’t get into this one. It was a pretty quick read for me but I never felt HOOKED, you know? I wasn’t very invested in this story which was a bummer.

Leave The World Behind – 4 stars

Oh my gosh, I don’t even know how to explain this book. Given my hope to read only holidayish happy things this month, I REALLY wanted to read this one – but perhaps it could have waited until January or February. I think this book is considered a psychological thriller, but it also deals with racism and how people act and respond during a tragedy. The story follows a family who rents a vacation home, but shortly after “something” happens. The frustrating thing is that we are never told WHAT happens – is it some sort of terrorism or chemical warfare or something? Very weird things start happening (honestly it was freaky) and what made me crazy is that we get NO solution at the end! However, the book is still good and the writing is amazing. Def recommend, maybe just not at the holidays, haha.

This Close To Okay – 4.5 stars

Ooooh I loved this one! FYI this is an early release that I got through Book of the Month – it doesn’t come out until February. The story follows two strangers who meet under… interesting (!) and possibly devastating circumstances. There are some truths held back and a twist and this is just such a great story. The book jacket mentions the magic of human connection and I have no other words to describe it – that is the perfect description. Loved the ending of this so much. Definitely grab it when it comes out!

Jingle Wars – 2.5 stars

Oh man I wish I had better things to say about this, I hate giving a not-so-favoroable review. This story was cute – it was just a little too harlequin romance-ish for me. I love a romance novel but lean more towards women’s fiction over true gritty romance. For instance, the word “boning” is used more than once and I just couldn’t get past a lot of the language. Haha that makes me feel so old but I don’t know how else to describe it. I do love a steamy novel (hello, Idea of You!) but I just couldn’t do it with this one, it was a bit too raunchy.

This Time Next Year – 4 stars

Really enjoyed this one!! It was super cute. The story follows two people who were born at the same time and continue to run into each other with many coincidences. I really loved this story AND I loved the characters! It kind of had a bit of One Day In December vibe, but I may have even liked it more than that. I loved the storylines of both main characters and it was such a cute, feel good read that I needed in December.

Faking Under The Mistletoe – 4 stars

See how into Christmas reads I am? This was another super cute one. I have a hard time giving anything 5 stars because I hold Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter Street series in such high regard. But this was adorable! It follows Olivia who is obsessed with Christmas (so naturally I was obsessed with her) and gets entangled with her boss. I loved the story, it was super Christmasy and another light, feel-good read.

With the pandemic, I have barely been wearing makeup, but then when I got pregnant, I really pretty much stopped. I was just so sick for the last 3.5 months that I couldn’t even handle it. I figured whatever I shared beauty-wise would give it away!

So the last three+ months, basically since the moment I found out I was pregnant, my skin absolutely blew up. I have never had breakouts or pimples or acne in my life – not even in high school. The hormones must be doing a number on me right now. I’m not sure if I can call it acne, but it’s def clusters of pimples that have seemed nearly impossible to get rid of.  That, and combined with the fact that I can’t use my Dr Dennis Gross Peel Pads – it’s been rough!

I think it’s a combination of hormones breaking me out AND my skin being weirdly irritated and dry by winter weather. But it’s just been awful. Sharing below a few of the things that have helped to clear it up. A huge produce I said I’d never buy and one I rediscovered from when I was pregnant with my others.

December Beauty Favorites

Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick. This is one of the only things that has saved my skin in the last three months! I was desperate for weeks then I remember using this as a spot treatment when I was pregnant with Max. I ordered one and it IMMEDIATELY helped. Like, next morning. It def can dry out the skin a bit so you need a thick moisturizer over it – but I adore this. I am so thankful I remembered it from before!

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream. Yes, I did this. I still can’t believe it, but oh man was I desperate. In the last few months my with skin a disaster, I tried so many things. I ended up buying this after thinking about it for the last year or so. Long story short – combined with the blemish stick above and my caudalie toner, it has been a miracle worker. My skin is notoriously dry and always has been. This has worked wonders. It’s calming and moisturizing on another level. I don’t really have any scarring for this to clear up, but it has improved my complexion so much. I don’t even mind that I’m not using my other favorite skincare products anymore. The thing about this is that they don’t want you using any other products with it. It’s one of the reasons I always avoided it because I didn’t want to give up some of my favorites. But I was desperate, so it didn’t matter. One downside – the pump is GARBAGE. I’m on my third bottle and the pump hasn’t been great on any of them. Thankfully you can open up the bottom, take out the packaging and cut it to get out every last bit. See also: I have only bought this on sale! Would not pay full price for it.

Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. My sister-in-law gave me this for my birthday in early November because she loves it so much. I have to say this is the best gift ever – and I gifted it to someone for Christmas! I haven’t changed my shampoo in ages. This is amazing – it smells incredible, cleans my hair without drying out, the conditioner is perfect (my hair is also dry) and works – I am so, so happy with it! I already almost finished the bottles she gave me and I bought the jumbo ones.

Clinique Acne Solutions BB Cream. When I started breaking out, I noticed it was incredibly worse the day after I wore makeup. That wasn’t too often, but still – I wanted a way to combat that! I have used this before and ended up repurchasing. It’s tricky because my skin is dry so I can’t use too much of this, but the formula is super thin and blendable and it also covers SO well. I haven’t used it a ton, mostly because it has lots of ingredients that I don’t use normally in my face makeup. But there have been some times I’ve had to wear makeup and I even be used it as just a spot concealer. It’s really good.

Here’s a peek at everything I loved in November and December 2020! xo

FOOD

Lake Champlain Hot Chocolate. I discovered this on Rachel’s blog, and the kids are very into hot chocolate this year. OMG – this is incredible! It’s rich and wonderful. Super good!

Daily Harvest Smoothies. I can finally talk about how much I’ve been consuming these again now that I’m pregnant. My favorite is the strawberry peach, but so many of them are good! I’ve had a subscription for years but had it paused for awhile last year. So glad I bought it back.

FASHION

Leith Long Cardigan. This is about the least fashion-y favorites I’ve ever had, but eh… 2020. I bought this cardigan at the nordstrom sale in the summer and LOVE it right now. It’s kind of like wearing a light robe during the day but cuter. I’m obsessed!

Black Uggs. These could also be the least fashionable item ever, but every few years I need to get a new pair of black uggs and they are a lifesaver in this cold. I LIVE in these in the winter here. Plus, they are black so they aren’t THAT bad, right? They are basically my giant winter slippers, haha. I wouldn’t wear them OUT out, but I love them for wearing around the house and quick errands, which basically consists of picking up curbside groceries these days.

Faux Fur Slides. While we’re on the topic of ugly shoes… the last few years I’ve bought the (even uglier) version of these from Target. They are just so comfortable and perfect for running errands as long as there is no snow. This year I bought the amazon version and they def could pass for the gucci dupe from afar. The faux fur is fluffier and they are a bit cuter even though I still kind of hate them. They’re just so easy to wear!

MEDIA

Leslie Odom Jr Christmas Album. I’ve been listening to this since it released in early November and it’s SO good. I just love him so much. Def still on repeat here!

This Time Next Year. I read a lot of holiday books this month but this was probably my fave! Super cute.

Virgin River Season 2! Oh my gosh. I think I’ve rewatched the second season two more times. It’s SO good – just as good as the first, if not better!

HOME

Thymes Fraiser Fir Candle. My favorite winter/holiday scent. I adore this and it smells as authentic to a christmas tree as you can get.

iRoller Touchscreen Cleaner. I grabbed this while christmas shopping and am blown away at how great it cleans my phone, computer and iPad. Why have I not had one of these until now?

Renpho Eye Massager. I was sucked in by an IG ad or something for this – and ordered them. They are amazing. If you get tension or sinus headaches, these massage the area around your eyes and it’s awesome. Soothing and relaxing.

Kasa Smart Plugs. I use these most during the holiday season – I like to use them for all of our decor and lights, so then I can group them together for Alexa and turn on all the lights at once. They’re perfect! Def grab these for next year.

KIDS

Smockingbird PJs. I fell in love with smockingbird PJs for the kids this year! They are so soft and buttery. I don’t love their regular clothes, but their PJs are so cute and great quality – kind of seems like they are trying to be Beaufort Bonnet but with a lower price point.

Sight Words Wipe and Clean Book. Max LOVES these wipe clean books and they really help with his reading and writing too. He’s had some others for a few years but I got him this one on sight words and got emilia and preschool one. They are huge hits!

Christmas Village Wimmelbook. I’ve talked about these books for years – both of my kids, even Max, LOVE them. I was so excited to see a christmas version this year. These keep them entertaining for so long and they love looking at them together. These books are also great for long car rides.

2. And our living room is still a toy explosion. I can’t get it under control! If I go missing, you can find my buried under the toys.

3. Are you a tree-down before or after new year’s person? For me, it’s always done AFTER! At least a week or two. Growing up, this week between the holidays was the epitome of christmas for us – not before! I also love the twinkle lights too much to take them down already.

4. This flourless red velvet cake looks insane!

5. Every since switching to an academic year planner last year, I still get the new planner itch in December/January. I still use the passion planner (and adore it) but am curious which one you’re using for 2021!

6. Now that I spilled the baby news, I can tell you that I haven’t had caffeine in a few weeks and oh man, how I miss it. I only drink 1 cup a day and did so while pregnant with the others, but a few weeks ago I just couldn’t get ahold of my anxiety and it was the only thing I really had to cut out. I’m hoping to add it back in soon but man do I just miss the ritual!

7. TV things! I started Bridgerton last night and it’s so good. I didn’t think I’d like it because movies/shows/period dramas like that are just not my thing. But wow I loved it! Have you watched?!

8. What resolutions look like in 2021. Man, I want to make some but I also don’t know if I should! The overarching feeling I had in 2020 was that I just wasn’t accomplishing anything, you know?!

9. I couldn’t be more excited that I not only hit my reading goal for 2020, but that I also actually recorded it all and shared what I read every month! I JUST hit the goal so I don’t think I can add many more to my goal for 2021. I read 75 books this year – but maybe I can up it to 80 books.
