what i read in october

I had SUCH a great reading month. I really enjoyed the books… one book I loved SO much – like almost as much as some of my 2022 faves. It was light and fun and made me want to stay up all night and read. Now I’m looking forward to starting some holiday books for the season!

What good things did you read this month?

You can find my reading lists here and previous What I Read posts here.

And you can follow me on goodreads here!

WHAT I READ IN OCTOBER 2022

Scandalized – 5 stars

I LOVED this book so much. It was the exact thing I wanted to read at the time. The story follows two friends who knew each other growing up, run into each other on a random night and sparks fly. It takes off from there and oh man I just loved.this.story. It is steamy, but it’s not cringey if that makes sense.

It Starts With Us – 4 stars

I loved It Ends with Us and I reread it a few months ago in preparation for this. I will say that this book is everything I wanted it to be – it starts right at the very end of It Ends With Us and moves forward fast. There isn’t a ton TO the book but I got the story of what I wanted. I did like it and was satisfied with the ending. I don’t think it needed to be written, but I totally appreciate it!

Drunk On Love – 3.5 stars

I just finished this one over the weekend and it was super cute. I love Jasmine’s books and look forward to them every year. The story follows Margot who has a one night stand only to show up at her business (a winery! how fun!) the next day and learn the same guy is their new hire. It’s cute and a light read and moves quickly.

Love On The Brain – 4 stars

Got this one in my October book of the month box and it did not disappoint! It has one of my favorite tropes – enemies to lovers – and the story follows two coworkers who do not get along but have to work on a project together. This is such a fun quick read – I didn’t love it as much as this author’s previous book The Love Hypothesis, but it did come close.

1. Obsessed with these pumpkin donut waffles.

2. Today is officially starting my holiday/christmas season. I’m blasting all the music, we’re watching all the movies. I love doing this because I feel like we get the most enjoyment out of the season. I aim to be done with everything decor/wrapping wise by December 1 so I can just enjoy the season between work and the kids!

3. But of COURSE today kicks off my annual Thanksgiving series too. If you haven’t made the best stuffing ever yet, add it to your list this year.

4. It’s also officially the day where I beg Eddie to get rid of every piece of spooky decor by 5am. Goodbye Halloween!

5. What candy are your stealing out of the Halloween bowl? For me, it would always be snickers. Maybe caramello bars, but haven’t had one in a million years.

6. 10 easy ways to practice gratitude.

7. TV things… the end of Tell Me Lies – like what?! So many questions, I do not get it. I want to watch the whole thing over again.

8. How to simplify when you’re overwhelmed. Story of my life!

9. From last year, but I love these 61 days of festive activities!

Man these weeks are just FLYING by.

We had a packed week. These few weeks from the middle of October to mid-November are always crazy for us.

This hair, I cannot. It needs cut or something but I can’t cut his little Jaromir Jagr curls.

Fun at the park!

She loves her Halloween wear. I think it’s her favorite season.

This week was red ribbon week at school and everyday the kids had to wear something different. This was sports shirt day!

These boys.

Jordan’s favorite place to be post-nap.

Is there anything better than a rainy fall day?

We also had the book fair this week! YESSSSS, my favorite. Also, this was Hawaiian shirt day… hahaha.

And open house at school!

They were so excited to run around with friends and show off their stuff.

Stopped by sewickley creek greenhouse to see the christmas wonderland!

Spent time comparing my stanley and simple modern cups… um, I can’t believe but the simple modern wins out. It’s so much sleeker, lighter, slimmer, the straw doesn’t move and the ice holds so much longer. Oh it’s also $12-20 cheaper.

Jordan loves to sit in this cabinet. He will sit in here and babble to me while I cook.

Update: Emilia still loves doggies.

The colors though.

And the skies!

Emilia had her halloween party at school on Friday! She is being a “unicorn fairy” this year. She saw her shadow with a horn and I swear I have never seen someone so genuinely thrilled and happy in their life.

I mean!!

She is the best.

I had ordered the cutest Halloween cookie decorating kit from Micah Made Cookies.

They were SO into this.

The mini piping bags really took it over the top for them.

So happy!

The finished product.

Eddie’s pumpkin carving station. I don’t even want to tell you that one of these fell off the table and shattered after this photo.

More pics to come on Halloween night!

I threw together some random baked penne. Excellent with salad and garlic bread!

And I got one more Halloween PJ pic…

Because come Tuesday I’m breaking out the Christmas music!

Today I’m sharing all of my 2022 sephora sale favorites for the fall VIB sale!

It’s been forever since I did a dedicated beauty faves post. I do include my beauty picks in my favorites every month if you’re searching! But… mostly because once 2020 hit, I just wasn’t wearing makeup as much and in the last fives years or so, I’ve made a serious switch to skincare over makeup. So many of you have told me this as you’ve gotten older and I can totally relate. I still love makeup and beauty products, but skincare definitely comes first for me at the moment.

EVERYTHING below is something I use and love (or have used and loved) – these are all my personal recommendations. I ramble about them too. They probably come as no surprise considering I’ve talked about almost everything before, but here we are! I’d love to hear what you love so I can build out my wishlist!

The main thing: I love to use the fall VIB sale to stock up on holiday gifts (either sets for people or I break sets apart as little gifts too!) and my favorite skincare. I also love it to buy perfume during the sale, because you can rarely find that on sale (if ever!) – especially Tom Ford, Jo Malone, Killian, etc. None of this is sponsored, I just loooove talking beauty products with you.

2022 SEPHORA Fall VIB SALE FAVORITES

HOLIDAY GIFT SETS

Sephora Advent Calendar. I live for an advent calendar. Just bought this one this morning.

Pro Brush Set. These pro brushes are my favorites at the moment. I use them every day.

Laneige Lip Mask Set. And I use this lip gloss every night. My kids love it too.

Fenty Lip Gloss Set. This is the prettiest lip gloss ever – I love all three of these shades.

Holiday Must Haves Set.

Merit Blush Trio. This is the one new-to-me product. I love cream blushes.

Sephora Perfume Sampler. Some of my favorites in here!

Sephora Cologne Sampler. And this is how Eddie tests cologne too.

Olaplex Hair Repair Set. If you’re an olaplex lover, this is a hit. I get this for my mom for christmas every year.

Tarte Juicy Lip Gloss Set. Some of my favorite everyday glosses.

Sol de Janiero Bum Bum Cream Set. It’s no secret I adore the bum bum cream. It’s the best scent!

Holiday Lip Set.

Fresh Sugar Lip Balm Set. This is my go-to restorative lip set. I use this at night and keep one in my car and bag too.

SKIN

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream . I never stopped using my rich cream – at the height of the PD, I just used it as an eye cream! I LOVE how this works under makeup, both on my face and under the eyes. I will never be without this product. Yes, it is insanely expensive but if you do some research on it, it is a great product. If you’ve wanted to try, now is the time. It is rarely on sale more than this.

Sobel Skin RX Moisturizing Cream . This is very close to Bader above. It’s thick and wonderful and smells good. Almost as great as the above if you don’t want to spend $$$$$.

Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser. This has been my favorite cleanser for a few years and one I’ve repurchased probably ten times. I love how it cleanses, how it smells and the texture. It doesn’t dry out my skin at all.

Supergoop Glow screen . I still love this sunscreen. I use it both on non-makeup days and under light makeup. It evens out my complexion so much and the glow is incredible. If you don’t like a glow, do NOT get this. Only thing is that if I get it REMOTELY close to my eyes, it migrates into them.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen . I love this equally as much as the above, it’s just a different product. The formula of this is incredible. It’s almost like a primer and it’s great under makeup. This is a matte look – so nothing like the glowy one above.

Tan Luxe The Butter. I’ve repurchased this so many times – it blends incredibly and is such a nice self tanning cream to use. It is a gradual tanner and doesn’t transfer to clothes once dry. The smell isn’t terrible either.

Sol De Janiero Bum Bum Cream. My favorite forever, this scent is one that will immediately transport me back to pre-2020 days with so much happiness. I use this constantly and it is a wonderful moisturizing product.

Dr Dennis Gross Facial Steamer. I bought this last year and it has changed my life! Facials at home!! It’s wonderful. Would make a great gift (for yourself?! Ha).

Dr. Dennis Gross Daily Peel Pads. I haven’t stopped raving about these since I bought them and they really changed the texture of my skin.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. I love this cream for all over the body – everyone in our family uses this. It’s also fragrance free. It’s mild and great for eczema.

Stacked Skincare Dermaplane. Bought this last year, watched a few youtube videos and done! Dermaplane at home. It’s great.

Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip balm. Definitely my holy grail lip balm. It’s pricey and not one I keep in my purse (because they always go missing!), but it’s amazing for dry lips.

MAKEUP

Beauty Blender. I am never without a beauty blender for foundation/bb cream/concealer/etc.

Iconic London Underglow Blurring Primer. I don’t like primers but LOVE this. It just evens out the skin and smooths it – I use it on its own or mix with a tinter moisturizer or foundation.

Iconic London Blurring Skin Tint. Also love this!! I’ve been mixing it with the above. Still light coverage, but very natural and nice.

Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint. I still don’t like heavy foundation on my skin, and this is my current fave if I want a little more coverage. I’ve used this for two years and love how much it evens out my skintone. I’d say it’s light to medium coverage.

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue. If you like really light coverage, this is still my absolute favorite. I’ve used it forever.

KVD Beauty Good Apple Foundation. This was a tiktok sensation. It is very heavy foundation, but completely masks everything. EVERYTHING! I can’t believe how amazing it makes my skin look. I used this a ton last year when I did virtual events for my book onscreen. If you like full coverage, you can’t get better than this.

Too Faced Born This Way Concealer. My favorite concealer under my eyes. It is so perfect and not too drying.

Iconic London Liquid Highlight. Adore this highlight for mixing with foundation or moisturizer. It’s very liquidy and it’s pretty golden (almost too golden for me!) but it is wonderful for mixing. I use this almost everyday.

Westman Atelier Contour Stick. My favorite contour stick of all time. I use the shade biscuit. I’m on my second one and it is a great formula.

Westman Atelier Super Loaded Tinted Highlight. I have all 3 of these and love them. Rose is in the photos you see. The peau de peche is more warm. The soleil is bronzy. I love them all for different makeup looks and different times of year.

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks. This is the only blush I’ve used for over a year! My favorite shades are poppet and minette.

Hourglass Unlocked Mascara. I hate buying expensive mascara but omg this is WORTH IT. It’s a tubing mascara and does not flake or smudge, plus gives excellent length.

Benefit Gimme Brow. The ONLY thing I use on my brows. It’s so natural. Nothing compares to the tiny brush.

Kaja Wink Stamp Liner. If you like to do a cat eye but always mess it is, THIS IS FOR YOU! You just stamp on the cat eye. It’s awesome.

Nars Pro Prime Smudgeproof Base. This is my favorite for eyeshadow base. Have used it forever.

Shesheido Microliner Eyeliner. I just bought this last month and am STUNNED at how great it is. So easy to use and almost like liquid liner, but not.

Makeup by Mario Moistureglow Lip. Obsessed with this. It is SO moisturizing and love the colors. Like a balm with a lot of color!

Sephora Pro Foundation Brush. This is the brush that I use for my westman atelier products. I love how it blends! It’s super soft and I find it to be a great brush for the price.

HAIR

Dyson Hair Dryer. Eddie got this for me for Christmas last year. It is life changing. I would only ever buy it if it is on sale, and if you have a lot of hair. It adds so mcu volume and body!

Dyson Air Wrap. Another thing I didn’t think I’d ever buy, but last year I did. It is AMAZING! This can definitely be a one stop shop for your hair. If I could only take one hair tool with me to a deserted island, it would be this. It’s so pricey and rarely ever on sale!

Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Shampoo. Favorite shampoo ever! Get the value size if you can.

Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Conditioner. Same as the above. The scent is so good too.

Moroccan Oil Root Boost. I love this for some volume when styling. I use on wet hair before drying.

Living Proof  Restore Perfecting Spray. My favorite leave in condition. Doesn’t weigh down my hair at all.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. This is my favorite spray to use on dry hair. Adds texture and volume but isn’t sticky.

Sol de Janiero Dry Shampoo. Again, the best scent. If you need a dry shampoo, go for this!

T3 Whirl Trio. I bought this at a VIB sale a few years ago and still use it weekly. It is an amazing high-quality set that took me a long time to buy (so pricey!) but I use it SO much. And I love that it comes with three sizes of the wand.

FRAGRANCE

I am a warm fragrance person. I love all things vanilla, amber, mush, a very very light hint of floral – those are the scents I gravitate towards. These are a few of my all-time faves that I highly recommenced. Fragrance never goes on sale so this is the perfect time to try. I also always try travel sizes first when possible before buying a big bottle.

Carolina Herrara Good Girl. As a note, I hate this bottle. It kept me from buying it for years. But this is basically the best scent ever.

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc. My go to summer scent. A light coconutty but warm fragrance.

Tom Ford Lost Cherry Warm and delicious with a hint of red cherry. It’s so good.

Kilian Paris Love Don’t Be Shy. This is kind of marshmallowy and sweet but also light with light floral. It’s delicious.

Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamom. A longtime favorite of mine. Warm and floraly.

[as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are some amazon and general reward style affiliate links above. thank you for being here!]

A peek at everything I loved in October 2022!

FOOD

Stok Pumpkin Cold Brew. I know this is a repeat but I just love it SO much. I don’t like regular Stok, so it always surprises me that I love it this much.

Waterloo Spiced Apple Seltzer. This is another delicious fall drink. So good on it’s own but also love it mixed with some apple cider and caramel vodka in my caramel apple crush. I found mine in store at Target!

Pumpkin Gooey Bars. These are one of my favorite pumpkin treats. So many flavors and textures and different enough from pumpkin cookies or pie.

HOME

Simple Modern 40oz Tumbler. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I love it more than my Stanley tumbler. It is sleeker, more attractive, slimmer, the lid screws in so much tighter and the straw doesn’t budge. It’s so good. It doesn’t leak at all (that was never a concern of mine for the Stanley) and just looks so much nicer.

Hotel Lobby New York Candle. This smells like the most delicious cologne – it’s very warm and fall-like but not sweet at all. Unfortunately it appears that it’s sold out now. I also LOVE their signature candle and holiday candle too!

Flameless Taper Candles. I love flameless candles but this is my first go at tapers. I’ve been using these since September and think they will look even better with Christmas decor!

Sauce bowl and ladle. I bought this a few months ago when shooting Thanksgiving content and it is my new favorite table piece. It is SO pretty on the table. Sure, great for gravy but also for homemade salad dressing or mini soup shooters!

BEAUTY

Kaja Wink Stamp Liner. I have hooded eyelids and have always had a hard time with winged liner. This is literally a stamp that you touch to your skin once and boom, it’s done. I love it! I could have used this years ago, haha.

Tinted Lip Enhancement. I saw this on IG and bought it months ago – I love it. I’m on my second tube. It is super soft and moisturizing but also has a very light pink wash. This is one I always keep in my car and purse.

Kaja Moon Crystal Eye Pigment. This is my current one-swipe eye color. I love these. I use different versions all the time and once I finish, tend to try a new one. This one is really good. Also is a great base for shadow.

FASHION

Neon pink Nike Air Max. Hello, I should probably buy five pairs of these so I can wear them for the next ten years? I love this air max shoe for comfort and then this color… instantly sold.

AllSaints Harper bootie. I talk about these every fall! And every Nordstrom sale. I got the version three years ago in the Nordstrom sale for half price and they are my most worn fall and winter boot. They are so comfortable and easy to walk in for being over three inches. I can walk and stand in these for hours, that is how comfortable they are.

Calia long puffer vest. I LOVE my short puffer vest and wear it 24/7 – seriously it’s like my fall/winter uniform for casual dress. I hated the long ones last year but some on people this year, loved it and got this one. I LOVE IT. It’s all the fun and coziness of the puffer without half of the bulk. It’s also great for Max’s hockey games and sitting on cold bleacher seats!

MEDIA

Scandalized. I’ll talk more about this in my October reads but I LOVED this one. It is steamy but not cringy. I loved the story so much and it was a great fast read.

Midnights by Taylor Swift. I like it even more than I thought I did at first. It’s so catchy.

Tell Me Lies on Hulu. I have a love/hate relationship with this show. No one is really likable (except for Evan and Bree) but I couldn’t wait to watch it every week. The finale end was shocking.

KIDS

Crayola Scribble Scrubbies. Emilia got these for her birthday last year and loves them. They provide hours of entertainment for her. I just bought a new variety for her birthday next week.

Duplo bath blocks. We are huuuuge lego fans over here and I just found these last week. Such a good find! Jordan desperately needed some of his own (and new) bath toys and these were just the right thing.

Touch & Learn USA Map. I’ve mentioned how Max is super into geography. He has loved this. He grew out of it pretty fast because he just soaked up all the info and memorized it, but I think he would have loved it even more at age five.

[none of this is sponsored, i just love to tell you what i love every month! there are a few general affiliate links above! xo]

1. I could not be more obsessed with the whole barbiecore trend. I will wear everything barbie pink for the rest of my life, thank you very much.

2. Last week I went through a phase of burning everything. I burned something in my cast iron, then put it on a pot holder, which burnt through the pot holder. Then I burned toast. Then I burned rice in a pot for the first time ever!

3. Thoughts on the new Taylor Swift album? I really like it, which surprises me because I always prefer something more upbeat and pop-ish (didn’t love her last album, but still listen to lover and 1989 on repeat). Emilia LOVES the music so we listen quite a bit!

4. How do you define success?!

5. My mom has basically made friends with spider. It’s a rather large spider on the outside of her kitchen window (thank god?!) and it’s been there for WEEKS. I.am.freaked.out.

6. While we’re on the topic of things freaking me out… I might have mentioned this before, but for some reason kids loosing teeth grosses me out. By kids, I mean Max, and by loosing teeth, I mean that I get squeamish when he has a wiggly tooth. It’s almost like I have a phobia!

7. TV things!! I started From Scratch and had to stop at episode six. I probably should have stopped earlier. Way too sad, triggering and emotional for me right now. I am a baby and cannot watch anything like that at this season in my life. The acting and storyline was great though.

8. 7 holiday prep tasks to do right now! Makes life so much easier.

9. My gift guides are coming next week!! I usually post one per day for six days or so. Do you like that method or would you rather me post them alllll at once, on one day?

10. Also, this is the time of year when I get all of my kitchen tree ornaments! Every year you guys ask about my italian cookie ornaments and they are in stock here. This is the first tree I put up every year.

I can’t believe we’re heading into the last week of October.

These next two months are absolutely crazy over here… of course with the holidays but everyone’s birthdays fall in these months too! We had a fairly relaxed week and weekend and I barely took any photos!

Don’t worry I’m still losing my mind over the leaves.

This warms my heart. I am a big pen/paper person and leave notes for things so we don’t forget… Max left himself this note one night last week.

How cute are these babies! Side note: will all of Jordan’s teeth ever come in?

I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

We did a paint project. This always calms the kids down if they are running wild.

This cracked me up! Jordan on his belly playing with his busy board.

Emilia was very into her jewelry.

We had a crumbl tasting party with grandma and pap.

Then we had a cousin party at the mall the next day! Couldn’t live without the nordstrom mother’s lounge.

Emilia and (not so) baby Coop are obsessed with each other.

Max is the BEST big brother.

Loves a good stroll.

Little loves!

This weekend, Emilia and I went with friends to see Peppa Pig!

We had lunch before.

It was so cute.

While we did that, Eddie took Max and Jordy to see a sports card trade show. Max is really into baseball, hockey, football cards and more.

This girl is just the happiest most loving sweet thing. I am so lucky!!

“Helping” with the thousands of leaves!

We had gorgeous weather!

This baby boy. Eeeep.

Max is making his first communion this year and today we had our first workshop for it.

And Jordan loves to unload the dishwasher. I can’t get enough of them!

fall 2022 reading list

This fall book list is giving me all the cozy vibes! I am so excited to share my fall 2022 reading list with you today.

Oh my GOSH you guys – there are SO many amazing books out this year! Lots holiday themed books which seems to be a trend now that I am loving – they are some of my absolute FAVES. Elin Hilderbrand’s winter street series being my fave of all time – I reread it every year – if you’re in the mood for something Christmas-y that lasts.

I often struggle the most in fall when it comes to finding time to read. Which is crazy since it’s perfect reading weather! I live to curl up on the couch and read an entire book, though that exact scene hasn’t exactly happened since I had kids. Most times it’s me staying up half the night to get in my favorite reading time. But still. These lists mean that I have options right in front of me to choose from. I’ve been sharing what I read every month and of course, you can find all of my reading lists right here.

What’s on your list to read this season?

P.S. almost all of the links below go to bookshop.org, which supports your local indie bookstores. Please shop there when you can!

2. ‘Tis the season for the time of year when I have to cover my face as scary movie commercials come on TV.

3. This article on present bias is SO interesting!

4. We have spotted lantern flies everywhere here – they are so gross. They are also HUGE. Last week I almost stepped on one that was inside our house on the kitchen floor. You can imagine that I wasn’t dramatic at all…

5. See above for why you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to go camping. Ever.

6. How to build a stronger relationship with yourself.

7. TV things! This episode of Tell Me Lies was crazy. Also watched Greys… gosh I love Scott Speedman so much.

8. I can’t believe it but I am already SO into the christmas spirit this year. Ready to start listening to christmas music ASAP. Trying to wait until the 1st!

9. On that same note, it may be because I have all our christmas recipes done for this year and am working on new year content… bring on all the bowls and easy meals!

Just your weekly dose of fall spam here on the blog.

It’s so extra beautiful this year!

How cute is my little hockey guy!

First time coloring.

Have you ever put magnatiles on the garage doors?

From markers to chalk. Please note the socks + sandals.

Sometimes I love a rainy day. Max LOVES the rain.

This poor little bubbas can’t catch a break. We visited the pediatrician so much the last three weeks, I started to feel like a crazy person. Double ear infection and croup for him.

Later in the week we had a school hayride!

The sky was GORGEOUS.

And they got to pick pumpkins at the end.

This was the sky at the end of the night. AMAZING.

This weekend, my mom and I took the kids to see Frozen!! I cannot with this dress for Emilia. I love it so much, she loves it so much. Everyone stopped us and asked about it. It’s so glittery and fun. She was so comfortable in it. And her shoes lit up too. I will literally never forget this night and how adorable she looked.

The dress reflected light ALL night long. It was so fun! I was on the fence about getting this for months and finally did back in the summer. I am so glad I got it for her. She didn’t want to wear an Elsa or Anna dress, but picked this out of the closet.

I can’t believe these babies are mine!!! Also to note, Max looks equally as delightful, he wanted to wear a shirt that would look “special” for Frozen too.

My dinner companions!

Cheeeese.

They were so excited for our dinner.

Pizza, salad, arancini… a good night.

Then we walked over to the theater!

I just cannot with how much I love them.

Verrrry excited.

They did enjoy it but were very bored during the songs that aren’t in the movie. Luckily it moved quickly and those parts didn’t last very long. They loved Sven and Olaf!

I packed them bags of m&ms which they promptly ate before the show even started.

We finished off the weekend with a birthday party in the park and hockey! So glad my little lovebug is feeling better.

How is this real life?!
