One of my many missions in life is to create fresh beet recipes that will win over even the biggest beet skeptics. Luckily, Jack has given me ample practice over the years. When we first met, he wouldn’t come near a beet, let alone taste one. But with time (and only a little trickery), I’ve gotten him to try and enjoy a host of beet recipes. Just last week, he devoured an entire beet salad at dinner, proclaiming how much he loved it with every bite. So if you’re still on the fence about beets, I get it. Their earthy […]

FOOD

My pumpkin pie steel cut oats. This has been breakfast on repeat. I make a batch at the start of the week and reheat a portion each day. Absolutely love them!

Fannie May S’mores snack mix. Oh my. This is completely addictive – once you start, it’s all over. Crunchy grahams and marshmallows covered in milk chocolate. Everyone freaks over this.

Leinenkugel Harvest Patch Shandy. I’m not a huge beer lover, but I can’t pass up a good pumpkin beer with a cinnamon sugar rim! This has easily taken the #1 spot for me. My definitely favorite!

FASHION

Athleta Made to Move Mask. I love the regular Athleta masks but got these last month and they are wonderful!! I don’t use them to work out since I’m just in my house, but I actually prefer these ones over others when I have to go out. I also love that these come with the elastic band to go around the back of your head if needed!

Via Spiga Packable Hooded Raincoat. This was a Nordstrom anniversary sale purchase and I am in love. It is SO lightweight (would be incredible for travel, whenever that can happen again) and is super cute. The best part is that it has a big hood! And it’s not just for rain – I’ve worn in while taking Max to school because the mornings are getting chilly. It’s great for cool weather.

Moonlight Lace Pajamas. It’s no secret that I am OBSESSED with the nordstrom line of pajamas. They have been a huge staple since I had Max. They are so soft and stretchy. This is a new version and I love it because of the short sleeves but also – no buttons. So comfy. I could LIVE in these!

Vionic Relax Slipper. Okay this is apparently the year of the slipper for me, but who is surprised. Last month I hurt my foot and needed to have support at all times in the kitchen. I wear shoes when working but a friend recommended these to me for cooking dinner, etc and I may never go back. They are pricey, but I have never had such a supportive slipper. They are incredibly comfortable. They aren’t that cute, but they are worth it. P.S. I have the black ones and they constantly sell out but come back in stock.

MEDIA

One To Watch. This was our September book club pick and it was SO GOOD. I highly recommend this book! Light and fun but also had a lot of depth. I was hooked in the first few pages.

Friday Night Lights. I can’t believe it took me until now to watch this entire series and I adored it. Adored!

Keith Urban The Speed of Now. This might sound weird but I really don’t listen to country music unless it’s in the summer. But!! 2020 has changed that and I love Keith Urban’s new album!! The song with P!nk called One Too Many is so good.

Podcasts! Here are a few of my favorite episodes from this month: Day 7 on Armchair Expert (this is so emotional and so good. I love Dax.), Harry and Meghan Finding Freedom on Be There in 5 (love this discussion with Merritt Beck!), Venita Aspen on Bad On Paper (if you don’t follow Venita, you must!), and On My Mind on Unlocking Us.

HOME

Swell Calcatta Gold Insulated Tumbler. I didn’t think I’d be a travel mug coffee kind of person, but sometimes I haven’t finished it by the time I leave to take Max. This is the perfect size – I can do hot or iced coffee in here and it stays great. I can also fit a straw through the top lid.

Mackenzie Childs Spooky Pumpkins. Pretty sure I have mentioned these every year, but they are by far my favorite piece of fall decor. First, I love that they aren’t orange, second, I love that they are perfect for Halloween but then can be turned around for Thanksgiving

Homesick Pumpkin Patch Candle. I did a post earlier this month on my favorite candles and have since gone through this one. I LOVED it. It is a such a nice pumpkin scent with just a hint of spice and not much sweet. I can’t find this exact one in stock online, but they have a very similar one called pumpkin picking!

Gold Cookie Sheet 3 Pack. I use these sheet pans every single day (sometimes multiple times a day) and use all sizes. They are great quality for the price!

KIDS

Yum Box. We’ve entered the world of lunch boxes this year and I bought a few to try out. This is our favorite – it’s so easy for Max to open, I love the segments, it’s light weight and it can go in the dishwasher. Max loves it too.

Straw Constructor Building Toys. This toy has been an absolute HIT with the kids. It’s fantastic for both ages and they’ve had a lot of fun building together too. I love that so much can be done with it, but then it also packs up nicely.

1000 Things That Go. My kids love this book (along with the food one too!) and get lost in it. Max loves to go over every.single.thing in the book – it’s so cute! I feel like they have also learned so much from these too.

Magnatiles. We’ve had magnatiles since Max was two, and he enjoyed them for years. He still does! But now, Emilia has discovered them and she is obsessed. It’s so cute. She is constantly building “doggy houses” and builds everywhere! These are such a toy that lasts and lasts.

I’m always sad to see summer go, but as I compiled this list of fall recipes over the weekend, I couldn’t help but look forward to the new season. It’s a chance for a fresh start, to dive headfirst into a new routine and new activities. Of course, I’ll miss our summer picnics and the nights when the sun didn’t set till 9, but I’m also excited for change – for hot bowls of soup, weekend baking, and long walks on crisp afternoons. To celebrate the start of the season, I’m sharing over 60 of my favorite fall recipes below. […]

FOOD

Elin Hilderbrand’s Grilled Zucchini Dip. Elin posted this recipe on her instagram and I knew I had to make it instantly. I have made this 5 (!!!) times since. I don’t think she currently has it saved to her highlights, but I wrote out the recipe here when I shared it in a weekly recap. It’s unique and so delicious.

Torres Truffle Chips. Serve these with the above. Another Elin recommendation. They are the best truffle chips I’ve ever had.

American Spoon Maple Granola. This is the best store-bought granola ever. I love it so much!

Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew!! I cannot get enough. This is probably my favorite drink of the year. I don’t love pumpkin spice things, but I do love PUMPKIN things – minus the spice. That is why this is so good. The foam is mostly pumpkin, minimal spice. Now I would like to figure out a way to order this decaf, because too much cold brew makes me a crazy person.

FASHION

Free People Straw Visor. I don’t know if we can call this fashion but it’s easily been my most worn item of August, if not the entire summer. I’ve had mine since last year and just adore it.

Tommy John Second Skin Lounge Pants. I got these at the anniversary sale for half price and am in love. They are the perfect pajama/relaxing pants.

Rails White Neon Shirt. Rails shirts are my love language and I pretty much live in them all year long. I’m absolutely obsessed with this one that has the neon detail.

MEDIA

Yellostone! The season was out of this world. The finale was a bit over the top, but I still can’t handle how much I love every character in this. I even love to hate Jamie. If you haven’t watched it, it would be a great one to binge right now.

Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover. This was my favorite book of August. Colleen’s writing is one of my absolute favorites – she pulls me in instantly.

HOME

Crate and Barrel Chip Dip Bowl. For previously mentioned zucchini dip! I have had multiple chip/dip bowls over the years, but they are either larger lazy susans or plates when the dip bowl is separate. This is all connected and perfect for serving! Also great for guac and chips.

Vineglace Wine Chiller. This was the best thing I took on vacation last month. It’s like a giant yeti insulator but for a wine bottle. We used it every single day!

Corksicle Hot Pink Tumbler. And this has been my summer cup. I’ve used it for coffee, seltzer, cocktails and wine. I love the feel of it and of course it keeps everything hot or cold.

KIDS

Cat & Jack Rainbow Boots. Emilia is an accessories and shoe lover. For awhile, she was wearing a pair of Max’s rain boots in the house, but then we finally took them outside. So I bought her these ones and she adores them. My favorite thing is that she pairs these with shorts all the time. It’s the cutest.

LCD Writing Tablets. The kids love the boogie board and I bought these for our long car ride for vacation. They were a huge hit.

Veer Cruiser Wagon. This is a big one and not an item I mention lightly, but the amount of questions I got on instagram about this was wild! Max has officially outgrown the uppa baby vista double seat (I’m devastated, yes!), but he still likes to be in a seat sometimes. He can still fit in the citi mini double (slightly comfortably), but he doesn’t want to be reclined for long – and then Emilia refuses if he gets out. Both of those strollers have gotten a TON of use in the last 3 years. We are a stroller-loving family. So, I read a ton of reviews and bought the Veer. It is absolutely incredible and the kids will sit in it for hours. We walked for a few hours each morning on vacation and they loved it. We use it at the park or in our neighborhood. You can easily push or pull it – I mostly push, like a stroller. It doesn’t take turns well, so I wouldn’t take it to target or anything in place of a stroller, but it’s great on walks, beach, etc. Absolutely love it!

I’m back with some beauty faves! Finally!

So for the first time in nearly ten years, I didn’t share a beauty favorites last month! I mean, let’s be real – I have barely been wearing makeup for months (in fact I’m at a point now where when I DO wear makeup, it feels like SO much on my skin!) and I’m still using all my favorite skincare products – the same ones. There have been a few new things I’ve tried and mentioned over the last few weeks on my summer fridays posts, but I figured I’d put together a dedicated post for August! These are always my favorite posts to do, but I often feel repetitive since I really love my skincare routine and use nearly all the same stuff.

Max is starting school soon and once we’re in more of a routine, I think my makeup game will go up a bit! But otherwise, I really haven’t bought much makeup at all… if any. Here are a few things I’ve been loving over the summer!

August Beauty Favorites

Herbivore Coconut Hydrating Body Oil. This may be my favorite product of the entire summer. Since June, I’ve used half the bottle. It’s replaced body lotion for me occasionally after a shower. It does not leave your skin greasy or oily at all. It smells INCREDIBLE. It’s like a sweet coconut – not a tropical coconut. It’s a very lovely scent! And bonus, it has a pump, which is always so much more convenient than a dropper with oil.

54 Thrones Beauty Butter. I am obsessed with this. I wanted it months ago and it was sold out, then it popped up on Nordstrom’s website as available! I have the vanilla scent, but it’s not a warm, sweet vanilla. It’s like a fresh, slightly floral (in a good way, because florals usually make me sneeze) vanilla scent. The product itself is SO moisturizing and you only need the smallest drop. I’ve been using this on my hands and also some dry skin spots before bed. I really want to try the facial oil too!

Elta MD Full Body Aero Sunscreen. I bought this after Lacy started using it and it is wonderful. You do have to rub it in after spraying, but it is SO light and not thick at all as it goes on. It’s really nice for body sunscreen! Plus, it’s the same brand as what I use on my face.

GIMME thick hair ties. These came up on an amazon search when I was looking for hair ties for Emilia. I knew they would be too big for her but may work for my hair. I LOVE THEM. They are so stretchy and soft but also hold my hair really well. And I love how thick they are.

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc. Still my favorite scent of summer by far – so fresh, but coconutty, but beachy, but warm. I adore it. I even like to mix it with the coconut scent I mentioned back in June. I find that it layers well with everything!

What has your beauty routine looked like this summer?! Anything you’re looking forward to for fall?

[as usual, none of this is sponsored and all of these products were purchased by me. i am not affiliated with any of the companies above, nor do i accept free products. just love to talk about what i like, makeup junkie to makeup junkie. there are some amazon and general reward style affiliate links above. thank you for being here!]

Of all the vegetable recipes I post, eggplant recipes are the most divisive. Early on, this surprised me, because eggplant recipes have always been some of my favorite foods to eat. As a kid, I never wanted to stop playing at dinnertime, except when my mom was making eggplant Parmesan. And when I started to explore vegetarian cooking on my own, grilled eggplant was one of the first dishes I mastered. But if I’ve learned one thing through writing Love and Lemons, it’s that not everyone likes eggplant. I’ve heard it called spongy, bitter, and bland, and to that I […]

best veggie burger recipe

Have you met my favorite veggie burgers? If not, it’s about time! I have high standards for veggie burgers, and these put all the rest to shame. I have a feeling they’ll become your favorite veggie burgers, too.

These veggie burgers are hearty and satisfying, and feature an irresistible combination of flavors. They start with a base of quinoa, black beans and oats. Then we amp up the volume with sweet potatoes, fresh herbs, and some carefully chosen seasonings. They’re a little sweet and a little spicy, in the best of ways.

veggie burger ingredients

You may recognize this recipe as the “Sweet Potato and Black Bean Veggie Burgers” that have been hidden in the archives for quite some time. There’s a chance you’ve enjoyed these burgers in my cookbook, Love Real Food, sandwiched between buns with a crisp lime-cilantro cabbage slaw and guacamole (page 177).

Or maybe you’re seeing these burgers for the first time right now! If so, I’ll share why this veggie burger recipe is my favorite:

  1. These burgers are absolutely delicious. In fact, these are the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had. They’re better than any restaurant’s, and far better than store-bought frozen veggie burgers.
  2. These burgers retain their shape before, during and after cooking. Many veggie burgers are a chore to make or to eat, but these are totally fuss-free.
  3. You can cook these burgers in the oven, on the stove, or yes, even on the grill. They also freeze well, so you can make a full batch and enjoy them over time.
  4. These veggie burgers are perfect for serving to friends who follow special diets. These burgers are vegetarian, of course. They’re also conveniently vegan, gluten free, nut free, egg free and soy free.

When I made our grocery list this week, one thing was clear: Jack and I were going to be eating a lot of tomato recipes. I needed cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, and tomatoes on the vine. But at this time of year, I think that’s how it should be. As a rule, I don’t buy tomatoes out of season. They’re often picked while they’re still unripe, so they never become really flavorful. Instead, they’re bland, watery, and mushy. So when summer rolls around, I have just a few months to make every tomato salad, sandwich, pasta, and pizza I’ve imagined […]

A list of all the things I loved in July! xo

FOOD

Jose Cuervo Sparkling Rosé Margaritas. Okay I have the funniest, snackiest, (trashiest?) favorite snacks for you this month but I can’t help it. First, this canned rosé margarita. I can’t believe how good it is. I am a margarita snob (fave recipe right here) and have never loved a canned version. I don’t even like ones made from most restaurants if they use sours mix. Well, this is everything. They are absolutely incredible! Pour over ice and you’re in heaven. (Side note: I did try the original and strawberry flavors and did not like those.)

Angie’s Rosé Popcorn. This is another favorite find of the whole summer. First, it’s pink. Second, it tastes so good. It’s addictive. It’s salty but sweet and definitely tastes like rosé but in a really good way. I promise.

Trader Joe’s Patio Chips. If you have not tried these patio chips yet, RUN and get them before they are gone. I am not even a chip person. These are incredible – they have a sweet, smoky and savory flavor – a mix of BBQ and dill pickle and everything delicious.

Waterloo Coconut Sparkling Water. Another drink for you, but this time a sparkling water. Wow oh wow – this coconut flavor is fantastic. Super summery. It’s great on its own or as a mixer!

FASHION

Freedom Moses Neon Slides. I still can’t believe I bought these because I am very anti-birkenstock, but I adore them. Like ADORE. They are so fun, really comfortable, really light – I actually love them for either a pool day or watering my plants. Only warning – they really don’t have any support at all.

Maui Jim Olu Cat Eye Polarized Sunglasses. Remember my love affair for YEARS with the Costa South Point sunglasses? They were just about my favorite thing ever and they finally broke this year. I loved them so much because they are polarized. I have sensitive eyes and wear sunglasses year round, but especially in the pool or when working out outside – I NEED polarized glasses. The only thing I didn’t love about the Costa’s was the nosepiece – it would always get stuck in my hair. These sunglasses don’t have wire rims so they are perfect. I love them.

Warrior Longline Sports Bra. I was in desperate need of a new sports bra (or 2) and decided to try this one out based on the great reviews. I LOVE IT! It’s so good. Soft but sturdy and supportive. Since I basically live in one… will we ever wear real clothes again?!

MEDIA

Yellowstone. It might be my favorite show all year. We’ve watched since the beginning and this season is great. Kevin Costner is everything.

Hamilton on Disney+. Who else absolutely loved it? I’ve know every word to the sound track for years and just was so sad that I’d never get to see the original cast. I have seen Leslie Odom Jr in concert and he did a few songs, but seeing the ensemble was incredible.

Party of Two. This was our July book club pic and it was SO good. I loved it.

HOME

Good Cook Meat Chopper. Okay you guys have told me FOREVER to get this (especially on instagram during my stories when I’m breaking meat apart with a spoon) – but I finally listened and oh my word. This is life changing. If you don’t have one, get it!

Ello Beacon Tumbler. I got the ello glass tumbler earlier this year for iced coffee and I’ve been using this one with sparkling water and ice! I love the size and colors. While I still use my Yeti rambler all day every day, I use these other glasses for different drinks.

Porter Wine Glass. Yes, another cup! But my favorite brand (I love the storage containers!) put out these little wine glasses and I couldn’t resist. I absolutely love it. Perfect for the patio!

KIDS

Aquabeads. These are our newest obsession! Max can do these on his own but Emilia loves to help and do them too. Even I love to do it – it’s almost relaxing and mind numbing. It reminds me of the beads we used to iron in the 90s?!

Rocket jump launcher. This has been a huge outdoor hit. It’s so basic but really, really fun – and for both ages.

Jumbo coloring pad. We have used these since Max was probably one year old – we love them for painting! My mom keeps one at her house too and the kids love to pic a scene and paint it with her.

FOOD

ALDI sourdough crumpets. If you haven’t tried these yet, you must. They are incredible. SO fluffy and soft, then you toast them and spread with butter… omg. Better than an english muffin!

My grilled vegetable orzo. Because the smashed feta vinaigrette is everything! I can’t even count how many times I made it this month. A million! And I’m making it again this weekend.

Reese’s thins. I am unapologetically a chocolate snob and for years I have preferred Justins’ peanut butter cups of Reeses. Then I found these last month when buying s’mores ingredients and they are really the perfect thing for s’mores! I can’t believe how much everyone loves them.

FASHION

The apple pride sport band! Not that this is really “fashion,” (I mean, it may be the opposite, haha) but I adore the new pride band. It’s the sport band, so if you have your hands/arms in water a lot, it won’t be constantly drenched. I absolutely love it.

Z Supply Reverie Midi Dress. I looooove this dress! It’s so breezy and cool for hot days. It comes in a million colors and it’s cute. Just the most comfortable thing ever. I also have the animal tank dress and am obsessed!

Juliette Dunn Tie Dye Leopard Cover Up Dress. I am such a sucker for color and leopard print and this combines them! I live in a swimsuit cover up when the kids are swimming and love this one so much. I got it back in April and unfortunately I can’t find this in stock anywhere but the Juliette Dunn site. It is so, so cute and fun! It will be one of those cover ups that I use forever.

MEDIA

Gee Thanks Just Bought It Podcast. This is one of my new favorite podcasts. I discovered it after Rachel was on, and then I really fell in love again with the Elin episode!

The Vanishing Half. This was my favorite book I read in June. It is captivating and you get so sucked into the story.

Yellowstone. We love this show so much! It just returned two weeks ago and it’s as good as ever.

HOME

Tan Lines candle. Yes I sound like a broken record but this candle is the perfect summer scent. It’s not too floral-y, it’s not overly sweet, it’s not too coconutty. It’s perfect.

OXO salad spinner. The salad spinner has changed my life for washing and dry greens. Especially right now – I buy most of our kale and lettuce from a local farm and while it’s delicious, it’s still covered in dirt when I buy it! This has been a lifesaver and much easier than spreading the greens out on towels all over my counters.

Raw Sugar Watermelon Mint Hand Soap. This is our hand soap of summer! It has been for the last few summers and it smells so ridiculously good. The kids love it.

KIDS

Rainbow splash pad. This might have been the best quarantine purchase! We have a smaller splash pad from last year that the kids love too, but this is like one big amazingly squishy waterbed! It’s so cool and great for sensory play too – it feels so good to walk on. The description says it’s a slide, but we don’t have a hill, so we just place it in the flat yard. It’s super fun!

Connect 4. Max is obsessed with connect 4. He had played a few times over the last couple of years (like at the museum, etc) but we didn’t have the game until March. It’s one of his favorite things to play and he and Eddie play multiple games each night.

Jabari Jumps. I added so many new books to our collection last month and this is by far Emilia’s favorite. It’s so perfect right now too with swim season! I don’t know how we didn’t have this book yet. You can see some of our favorite kids books right here.
