When you think about preserving summer produce, pickling and canning are typically what comes to mind. Drying tends to be an afterthought, but it can be just as powerful for saving summertime flavors! There’s something calming about the drying process, too—you quite literally have to slow down and be patient—and you can easily create your own drying tools to make this ritual even more special.

We’ve teamed up with the audio innovators at Sonos to dream up your next afternoon project: an easy-as-can-be herb planter. Head outdoors and take the Sonos Roam with you—this portable, waterproof speaker will be your sidekick as you DIY, plant, and prune your way through the summer.

When you’re looking to add a little home-grown flavor to your cooking, herbs are the easiest way to spice things up. This summer, bring the outdoors inside with an easy-to-make planter box that will freshen up your space (and your meals). Planter boxes are ideal for folks who don’t have room for an expansive garden because they allow you to grow a lot of herbs in just a little space. In fact, even though I have several raised beds in my own garden, I always grow herbs just outside my kitchen window for ease of picking while I cook.

I have a love affair with compost—no, seriously, I do. It’s not just the magic of witnessing the breakdown process (how did my soup scraps turn into this?), but also how the resulting compost then becomes the hardest worker in my garden. Enriching poor soil? Check! Retaining moisture? Check! Helping suppress plant diseases and pests? Check, check! Healthy plants need healthy soil and the best way to get there is by adding compost and its beneficial microbes to your garden.

Let’s talk about some gardening SOS I wish I’d learned back in my early growing days: trellising. It’s one of those things that can make or break your harvest yield—especially when it comes to those towering types of vegetables. If you’ve ever had a plant shift into hyperdrive overnight (I’m looking at you, indeterminate tomatoes and just about any runner bean), then you know that a quick top-heavy growth spurt—especially when loaded with veg—can cause your plant to flop over and even snap in half if unsupported. Not exactly something you want to experience after waiting months for those juicy beauties to ripen for your weekend Caprese. So I’m here to help you skip those missteps and get that plant prop in place on time.

As a proud plant parent with a lots of indoor foliage, I try to make simple tasks like weekly waterings more fun than frustrating with a go-get-'em attitude. Turn on that music, put on a mud mask—it’s self-care for everyone!

But you know what also helps? Having the right tools for the job. Any watering can will hydrate your plants, but why not have some fun with yours? If you can have a favorite coffee mug to reflect your morning mood, you can—and should—have a favorite watering can that expresses your plant personality.

The most exciting parts of vegetable gardening, for most, are the wide-eyed shopping spree for seedlings (or seeds) and the long-awaited celebration of harvest. But there are obviously quite a few things to do in the days between. Let’s face it, gardening can seem like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming—especially if you can break down the tasks into bite-size goals that you can tackle through the week (or in some cases each month).

The bean has always held a special nostalgia for me. Some of my fondest childhood memories include standing at the kitchen sink helping my grandma snap beans after an afternoon of climbing the apple trees in her backyard. There’s something about that repetitive movement and the sound of snapping that still brings me comfort in my own kitchen as an adult—which is why it’s a vegetable I always have in my summer garden.
