Orange Cranberry Crisp (Gluten-Free & Easy!)

Admittedly, I’m not the hugest fan of traditional cranberry sauce. Perhaps that’s because it was mainly in jello form at most of my childhood holiday meals. However, cranberries, when done right, are incredibly delicious. This cranberry crisp proves that.

Baked to perfection, it’s a bubbly, saucy, tart-sweet, crisp dream. Dare I say it’s my new favorite crisp?! Plus, just 45 minutes and 10 ingredients required! Let us show you how it’s done.

To start, tart cranberries are tossed with orange zest and juice and naturally sweetened with maple syrup.

Sweet and spicy, festive and fruity, this cranberry pepper jelly makes for a perfect holiday appetizer.

Today I’m sharing a holiday twist on my favorite pepper jelly recipe, adding fresh cranberries for a unique flavor and gorgeous ruby red color. Despite the mix of peppers and cranberries, it’s still a pepper jelly first and foremost, rather than a spicy cranberry sauce (let’s just clear that up from the getgo).

Three glass jars of Cranberry Pepper Jelly on a light pink background, with fresh cranberries and mixed red peppers scattered around.

Look, I know I just posted a pepper jelly recipe all of 2 minutes ago (actually, it was 2 months ago, but we all know that in this alternate universe we’re living in time has no meaning anymore so…)

The thing is, the peppers just keep on coming. It’s mid-November and we’re still getting piles of both hot and sweet peppers with our bi-weekly CSA deliveries from Caney Fork Farm. Circumstances have made me extra-conscious about food waste, and that, paired with the fact that I just really don’t like peppers very much (so sue me), have led to batch after batch of pepper jelly (which at least has the benefit of being shelf-stable and more easily giftable than the fresh peppers themselves). I’ve made so much I’m actually running out of jars (oh, the horror!)

Three glass jars of Cranberry Pepper Jelly on a light pink background, one har with two spoons.

This holiday-variation pairs tart cranberries with sweet and spicy red peppers and just a hint of orange zest. I used mainly sweet red peppers, with two red Cayenne peppers thrown in for just a hint of heat (but you can easily customize this recipe to be as spicy as you’d like, as long as the final prepared quantity of peppers is the same, it doesn’t matter what proportion of that is hot versus sweet).

This year, it’s a sure bet that holiday gatherings will likely be more intimate, with perhaps more celebrating online rather than around a table. As you cozy up to the chimney…or computer, it’s nice to have a drink in hand either to take the chill off or to make things feel more festive. Unless you’re the lovely Ina Garten, who prefers to make drinks by the pitcher, individual drinks are a nice way to celebrate more intimate gatherings and you can make just one to two, or scale ’em up to make four or six, if necessary. My hot chocolate recipes (below) can easily be made in advance – in fact, they’re better if they are – then rewarmed right before serving. Marshmallows and whipped cream are optional, but if I’m going to be honest, they’re encouraged.

Here are my favorite and most popular drink recipes on the blog that’ll warm you up, including two types of hot chocolate (there are several others in Drinking French, including a Salted Butter Caramel version), French mulled wine, an apple-based cocktail, and a few libations with cranberries. There’s also a brown-buttery Old Fashioned, a pink Cosmo to brighten things up, a creative Kir, and Jeff Morgenthaler’s amazing eggnog. So no matter where you are, whether you’re at home with friends and family or able to gather out and about, here are some drinks I hope will help make this holiday season more enjoyable…

Vin Chaud

A winter classic in many countries, when they’re open (they’re closed at the moment), cafés in Paris will have the words ‘Vin chaud’ scribbled on a blackboard either inside or out, beckoning people to come in from the cold to have a glass. Patrons are usually huddled around terrace tables or standing at the bar, sipping glasses of warm spiced wine, but this year, mulled wine maison will be in fashion. My version of vin chaud is spiced with cardamom, star anise, cloves, and fresh ginger. And it’s even better if you tip a bit of brandy in it!

Creamy Vegan Broccoli Salad (Mayo-Free!)

When considering what recipes to share this holiday season, I couldn’t shake the idea of a plant-based take on classic broccoli salad.

Have you ever tried it? It’s basically a salad with raw or blanched broccoli, bacon, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, and onion tossed in a sweet mayo-based dressing. While indulgent, it satisfies that salty-sweet flavor I’m often looking for in salads.

So I got to work on an easy plant-based version and am super pleased with the results.

In the land of mistletoe margaritas and white christmas punch, I’m dropping by with a mistletoe manhattan!

We’re basically covering everyone’s preference here on the blog with a festive holiday cocktail, so if you’re a whiskey person, here is your glass. Get ready to chill it!

the start of sugared cranberries

We’ve got a little whiskey, some cherry, some cranberry, a dash of bitters and vermouth – garnished with sugared cranberries and a sprig of rosemary for fun. You can also sugar the sprig if you want! You know, I’m just over here trashing up one of the world’s favorite cocktails and giving it an elf-inspired name.

Forgive me.

The mistletoe manhattan is a fun holiday spin on the classic manhattan cocktail! Sugared cranberries and rosemary make this super festive.

My mom always ordered manhattans when I was a kid and I would beg her for the maraschino cherry. So would my brothers! She never let us have the cherry until much later in life (um, it is completely soaked in booze, after all), but honestly, I liked it. I thought it tasted good, and I’ve always liked whiskey and bourbon. It’s definitely not LIGHT, it’s not what I drink when I want a light and refreshing cocktail. But this is almost… refreshing?

Believe it!

Some people have a bad experience with whiskey (I’m looking at you Eddie) and can’t handle the flavor – and I get it. But shockingly I enjoy it and think it tastes GOOD. I’m obsessed with cooking and baking with it. And I’d almost always choose a bourbon cocktail over a vodka one, but it does sort of depend on my mood.

The mistletoe manhattan is a fun holiday spin on the classic manhattan cocktail! Sugared cranberries and rosemary make this super festive.

Right now, I’m in a major Christmas mood! Seriously, I may be driving my family nuts with the fun holiday experiences over here. I could be an extra (or, um, main character) in the movie Elf, minus the whole maple syrup addiction.

See, there is no better time for a festive drink than around the holidays. I know that I go absolutely CRAZY about fall and apple cider cocktails, but right now is such a FUN experience when it comes to hosting, entertaining and serving snazzy drinks.

Apologies for just using the word snazzy.

But we have to live up to the festivities while we can! So serve a little mistletoe manhattan with cheer!

The secrets to this cranberry bread

What makes this the best cranberry bread? I’ve been scarred by cranberry breads of Christmas past that are too oily, too sweet, or too bitter orange-y. This one makes it all right again, in a culmination of holiday sweet bread perfection. Here’s what makes this cranberry bread uniquely delicious:

  • Oat flour. To infuse nutrients, this bread uses ground oats or oat flour along with the all purpose flour. You can make your own oat flour by blending the same amount of rolled oats in a blender or food processor. This makes the bread heartier and gains the nutrition benefits of oats.
  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. This cranberry bread is without orange: instead, spices carry the way.
  • Bourbon (optional)! Adding a splash of bourbon gives this cranberry bread a nuance to the flavor that’s irresistible.
  • Crunchy sugar topping. This bread has a nice crispy exterior, both from the recipe itself and from adding a sprinkle of glittery turbinado sugar.

How to store cranberry bread

What’s the best way to store a quick bread like cranberry bread? Here are a few different ways:

  • Room temperature (2 to 3 days): If you think you’ll eat the bread quickly, store it at room temperature and cover it with aluminum foil. The benefit of this method is that it keeps the crunchy texture on top and is easy to eat.
  • Frozen (up to 3 months): To extend the life further, pop your sliced bread into the freezer wrapped in foil and in a sealed container or plastic bag. It can last at least 3 months, or maybe more. Consider doing this with half of the loaf, and keeping the other half out at room temperature.

Add a sparkle: use turbinado sugar!

It’s optional, but this cranberry bread is complete with a sprinkle of sparkly turbinado sugar on top. What is it? Turbinado sugar is raw sugar with large, light brown crystals. It’s less processed than refined white sugar, because it’s boiled only once to remove the molasses (refined sugar is boiled multiple times). It has a more complex, caramel-y flavor than refined sugar. Because its crystals are large, they add a nice texture to the top of muffinscakes and breads.

What is a substitute for turbinado sugar? For this cranberry bread, you can use a light sprinkle of light brown sugar or refined sugar in its place. While it doesn’t have the signature large crystals, it has a similar flavor.

Ways to use up whole cranberries!

The reason Alex and I made this cranberry bread was…we were looking for ways to use up whole cranberries ! We bought cranberries as a garnish for making festive Poinsettia’s: a cranberry champagne cocktail. With almost an entire bag left, we weren’t sure what to do with the rest! Here are a few ways to use up whole cranberries:

  1. Cranberry bread. Go to the recipe below!
  2. Cocktails. Use them as a garnish for our Cranberry Champagne Cocktail, or any of our other cranberry cocktails: the Cosmo, Madras, and Cape Codder.
  3. Muffins. Use them instead of blueberries into our Healthy Blueberry Muffins, or add 1 cup to our Best Blender Muffins.
  4. Salsa. Make our Fresh Cranberry Salsa as a holiday appetizer.
  5. Sauce for baked brie. This Baked Brie with Roasted Cranberry Sauce is so satisfying! Perfect for Christmas dinner or winter entertaining.
  6. Jam. This sweet tart Cranberry Jam is fantastic on biscuits.
  7. Crisp. Make a Cranberry Crisp as a wintery dessert.
Cranberry bread

Can you make it vegan or gluten free?

Good questions! We have not tested variations here, but here’s what we recommend:

  • Vegan: For vegan, plant-based and dairy-free, we’ve made quick breads vegan (like our vegan zucchini bread) with this formula and it works well. Try using flax eggs for the eggs, any non-dairy milk for the milk, and coconut oil or neutral oil for the butter.
  • Gluten free: It’s already halfway there with the oat flour! Try substituting 1-for-1 gluten-free flour for the all purpose flour.

This cranberry bread recipe is…

Vegetarian.

Then remove from the pan and cool completely before slicing. Store at room temperature for 2 to 3 days, or frozen for at least 3 months.

  • Cointreau (or other orange liqueur)

Make sure to find 100% cranberry juice!

The most important thing to note with the Poinsettia drink is this: make sure to find 100% cranberry juice! There are lots of variations of cranberry juice on the shelf, and many of them have added sugar. If you find bottles labeled cranberry juice cocktail: stay away! It has added sugars or high-fructose corn syrup for extra sweetness.

Alex accidentally bought the sweet stuff when making this cranberry champagne cocktail recipe. Sadly, it turned out tasted overly sweet and “fake” tasting. When we looked at the bottle: it wasn’t 100% juice! I dashed off to the store and we remade it with 100% cranberry juice. It tasted perfectly crisp and tart: exactly what we wanted! All that to say: make sure to check the label and find 100% cranberry juice for this Poinsettia!

Poinsettia drink (Cranberry champagne cocktail)

Can you make a non-alcoholic Poinsettia drink?

You absolutely can make this Poinsettia drink without alcohol! All you have to do is substitute non-alcoholic sparkling cider, grape juice, or wine for the champagne. These days there are some great non-alcoholic sparkling wine options on the market. Check your local grocery to see what is available!

Making mocktails or 0 proof cocktails is perfect for including people who don’t drink alcohol, pregnant women, or kids. Our son Larson always wants to drink what we’re drinking…so you could make up some kiddie cranberry champagne cocktails for the young ones!

The Poinsettia (Cranberry champagne cocktail)

Do I need a cocktail shaker?

Cocktail shakers are inexpensive and if you make cocktails often, worth buying for ease of use. A cocktail shaker quickly chills cocktails by shaking them against ice. It has a perforated lid so you can easily strain out the cocktail. Here’s the cocktail shaker we use: 24-Ounce Cocktail Shaker | Amazon

What’s a substitute for a cocktail shaker? If you want to make this Poinsettia drink without one, use a glass mason jar! Place the cocktail in the jar and fill it with ice. Then screw on the top and shake! When you pour out the cocktail, use a mesh strainer to keep the ice inside the mason jar.
