The bento-style lunches that TikTok star Jessica Woo packs for her three young kids are, in a word, amazing. “Let’s make some lunch for my kids!” Woo announces at the start of most of her cooking videos. In one, Woo molds an adorable bear out of white rice complete with eyes, mouth, and paws made of delicate nori cutouts. In another, she conjures an entire Squid Game-inspired spread featuring hot dog “squids” and the show’s iconic dalgona candy. It’s little surprise that Woo’s TikTok channel has more than 5.5 million followers. Her creations are enough to make us wonder: Can Woo make our lunches, too?

They’re also enough to stir up some feelings of, ahem, inadequacy, in even the best of us—case in point, this hilarious guy. But fear not: You don’t have to go all-out to improve your kid’s lunch situation. Even Woo agrees. “It's just the little things,” she says. Most of what’s so impressive about her meals is the presentation, she adds, and even small adjustments can have a major visual impact. “If you're packaging it in this pretty way, [the food itself] can literally be dinner leftovers,” she says.

The Most Important Food Lesson I’ll Ever Teach My Kids

I grew up in the middle of the city in Copenhagen, but I found peace in nature. From as early as I can remember, I spent time in the woods and ocean, visiting my grandmother and other relatives on the islands of Fyn, in the Southern part of Denmark. I’d pick herbs from her garden or fish with my uncle and grandfather, the sight and scent and sounds showing me the way.

As a kid, I struggled in school; the more traditional side of academia collided with my energetic, restless boyhood. But in the ever-changing forests or the icy waters of Denmark’s archipelago, I found another type of education. Less theoretical, more tactile. I swore that when I became a father, I would bring my kids into nature. I wanted to instill in them the same type of curiosity and reverence for the land that I was fortunate enough to experience.

Those First Post-Birth Meals Are the Most Special—6 Parents Explain Why

In the days after my daughter was born, my husband made for me what I can only describe as the best BLT in all of existence. It was mid-July, and he’d carefully selected a juicy heirloom tomato from the farmer’s market. The bacon was thick and smoky, nearly a meal unto itself. The bread? Impossibly crusty, scraping the roof of my mouth in the best kind of way. A generous heap of raw alfalfa sprouts, forbidden for months to my pregnant self, added an herbal crunch, while slivers of avocado lent divine creaminess. A tangy slathering of In-n-Out-inspired “secret sauce” brought it together.

I devoured the whole thing while perched atop my Boppy pillow—I still needed a cushion under my bum at all times—and cried. It was just. So. Good.

The Best, Most Indestructible Dinnerware for Kids, According to a Parent

Whether your kid just started enjoying banana puree off a spoon or loves to dig into a chicken cutlet with her own knife and fork, the right gear makes that journey to becoming a full-fledged eater infinitely easier. You’ll probably want to stock up in stages: As fine motor skills evolve and appetites change, so will the dishware and cutlery needs. Once you know you like a particular piece, it’s a good idea to buy it in multiples so you’re not frantically washing bowls and forks while your toddler wails for her third snack of the day.

Best Bowls for Older Babies, Toddlers & Little Kids

Best Bowls for Puree Eaters, Self-Feeders & Beyond: Avanchy Stainless Steel Suction Bowl

Defend your walls and floor from the worst splatters with a bowl that has a strong suction cup base (for best performance, lightly wet the suction cup before pressing it down on the table or highchair tray). If your baby or toddler still overturns it, the bowl is still handy for when she starts mastering the spoon; the suction will help keep the bowl steady as she scoops. This stainless steel model is dishwasher safe, boasts an especially wide base for better suction, and comes with a handy lid for easy storing of leftovers (and oh, will you have leftovers).

For years, my parents sent me to school with the same lunch every day: a tuna sandwich on whole wheat, with an apple that invariably squashed the bread, all stuffed into a brown paper bag with my name written on the top.

Last year Ellen Kehs, a mom of three boys all under 10 in Papillion, Nebraska, signed up for an online workshop called “Stress Free Family Eating.” It ended up changing her life—or, at least, her dinner table. Before she took the class last January, Kehs recalls, she heard a constant nightly refrain: “I’m not eating that. Can’t we just have chicken nuggets or cheeseburgers or take-out?” A fight with the youngest would ensue. The middle kid would storm out.

In 2008, my then-boyfriend Joseph and I almost broke up over a chicken wing. It was a typical Sunday evening at a college-town pub, filled with mediocre beer, half-off wings, and gripes about grades. As was our custom, our Caribbean crew ordered more wings than we needed. That fateful night, one wing perched alone on the platter, when Joseph requested the bill and…a box.

Once upon a time, I scoffed at Sandra Lee and her “semi-homemade” juggernaut. I made my ratatouille from scratch, thank you very much. I rejoiced that a mole poblano would take me all day to cook. Then I had a kid, and—well—you’ve heard this song before.
