What are Mediterranean Ground Beef Meatballs?

Mediterranean ground beef meatballs are our flavorful twist on the classic beef meatball, infused with the vibrant and aromatic flavors of the Mediterranean from nutty tahini and bright lemon to briny olives and refreshing mint and dill. Plus, they’re made with lean ground beef, giving them a hearty and satisfying texture that no one can resist!

These Mediterranean ground beef meatballs are not only absolutely delicious — they’re super versatile, too! You can serve them as an appetizer, a main dish, or even as part of a mezze platter. Our favorite way to eat them is on pita sandwiches with arugula, salata baladi, and a generous dollop of tahini dressing.

Ingredients You Need

  • Lean Ground Beef – This is the hearty foundation of our meatballs!
  • Red Onion, Finely Chopped – Adds a pop of color and a subtle, sweet bite that balances beautifully with the beef and herbs.
  • Panko Bread Crumbs – We love these light, crispy crumbs and the way they keep our meatballs mouthwateringly moist.
  • Fresh Dill, Chopped – Dill adds a fresh, vibrant flavor that we adore.
  • Fresh Mint, Chopped – Mint adds a refreshing, cool note to the meatballs.
  • Lemon Zest – Zest adds a citrusy kick that brightens everything up.
  • Tahini – This creamy sesame paste infuses the meatballs with a rich, nutty depth that’s simply irresistible.
  • Kalamata Olives, Pitted and Finely Chopped – These olives bring a burst of salty, briny goodness to the table — they elevate the whole dish.
  • Salt – Salt does the job of enhancing all the natural flavors, making each ingredient shine in every delicious bite.
  • Flour – All-purpose flour helps to bind everything together, making sure our meatballs hold their perfect shape while cooking.
  • Egg

How to Make This Mediterranean Ground Beef Meatball Recipe

  • Make the Mixture. Add all of the ingredients except the flour to a large bowl and mix with your hands to combine.
  • Form. Add the flour and combine before making uniformly sized meatballs. Place them on a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  • Bake. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake until the meatballs are browned and have reached 160 degrees Fahrenheit on a meat thermometer.
  • Serve. Take the meatballs out of the oven and allow them to rest briefly before serving.

Variations

  • Swap Out the Beef – Use ground lamb, pork, or turkey instead of beef.
  • Add Feta Cheese – Mix in some crumbled feta cheese for a creamy, tangy twist!
  • Use Different Herbs – Experiment with fresh parsley or oregano instead of dill and mint for a different herbaceous flavor.
  • Spice it Up – Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or chopped jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Incorporate Veggies – Finely chop some spinach or zucchini and mix it into the meatballs to sneak some veggies in.
  • Try Different Binders – Use almond flour, oats, or a gluten-free flour alternative instead of panko bread crumbs and flour for a gluten-free option.
  • Change the Zest – Use orange or lime zest instead of lemon for a different twist on the citrusy flavor.
  • Add Pine Nuts – Mix in some toasted pine nuts for a nutty crunch and extra Mediterranean flair.

Can I Store Leftovers?

One of the best things about these simple meatballs is that they’re so easy to make and store so that you can just reheat them throughout the week or whenever you’re ready to eat!

To refrigerate, transfer the meatballs to an airtight container and store in the fridge for 3-4 days.

For longer storage, place the meatballs in a freezer-safe container or a resealable bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight or just microwave them straight from the freezer.
