We absolutely love the tang and icy texture of frozen yogurt, so Alex and I set about to create a next-level, simple way to make it at home.

Why we love this recipe: Our whole family goes crazy for this homemade frozen yogurt! It’s tangy, creamy, and full of bold flavor. Essentially a Greek yogurt ice cream, it works as topping for fruit desserts or with its own with all the fun froyo toppings. Count us all obsessed!

Ingredients in this homemade frozen yogurt recipe

All you need is 3 ingredients to make homemade frozen yogurt! The fourth ingredient is optional and not totally needed for flavor, though you probably have it in your pantry already. Here are the ingredients you need to make frozen yogurt at home:

  • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is our yogurt of choice because it’s protein packed, contains probiotics, and has a thick and creamy texture. We recommend using full fat Greek yogurt here for the creamiest texture and best flavor.
  • Heavy cream: The combination of cream with the yogurt is important for making a creamy texture. In our testing, simply freezing yogurt by itself is much too icy and grainy. (You can substitute half and half if desired, but the texture will be slightly more icy.)
  • Granulated sugar: We use sugar in our frozen yogurt recipe, but you can substitute any natural sweetener you like! Honey, agave syrup, and maple syrup all work well. Keep in mind that maple syrup makes the color of the yogurt slightly darker.
  • Vanilla extract (optional): The vanilla extract is optional here, but it adds a nice nuance to the flavor.

How to make frozen yogurt (step by step)

It’s nice if you have an ice cream maker for homemade frozen yogurt: it’s our recommended path for making this recipe. But you can also make it using a food processor! Here are the steps for how to make frozen yogurt at home (or go to the full recipe):

Step 1: Whisk together vigorously the yogurt, cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step 2: Freeze the yogurt mixture in an ice cream maker. Or, you can freeze it in silicon ice cube trays for 3 hours, then pop out the cubes and blend in a food processor until smooth. This should have a soft serve consistency (or freeze 2 to 3 hours for a scoopable consistency).

  • Ice cream maker: An ice cream maker makes the best creamy texture for homemade frozen yogurt, and it’s faster to whip up. We like this 2 quart freezer bowl ice cream maker, which is durable and has held up well over the years. If you make ice cream often and want to splurge, try an automatic ice cream maker.
  • Food processor: The food processor method takes longer because you have to freeze the Greek yogurt first. The texture is not quite as good, but it’s a great substitute if you don’t have an ice cream machine.

Ingredients

  • 32 ounce container (3 ¾ cups) full fat Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar*
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together vigorously the yogurt, cream, sugar, and vanilla extract (if using). Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved (test by rubbing slightly with your fingers to see if it is gritty, then taste). 
  2. Freeze the yogurt mixture in an ice cream maker, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Or, you can freeze it in silicon ice cube trays for 3 hours, then pop out the cubes and blend in a food processor until smooth. This should have a soft serve consistency. Top with toppings and serve.**
  3. Optional: For a scoopable consistency, freeze 2 to 3 hours, depending on your ice cream maker, to harden to a scoopable consistency.

Here’s a frozen cocktail that will blow your mind with its creamy, chocolaty flavor: the Bushwacker drink! It’s equal parts refreshing and rich—like a mashup of a chocolate milkshake and piña colada.

The Bushwacker is lusciously smooth with notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. It’s perfect for sipping poolside as a summer cocktail, or as a dessert drink any time you’re dreaming of sun. As two cocktail experts, this is one sweet cocktail we have a soft spot for!

The Bushwacker is a frozen cocktail made with rum, Kahlua, creme de cacao, cream of coconut, and milk, known for its creamy texture, sweet flavor, and boozy kick. Invented in the 1970’s in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, it has since become popular in Florida and the American South.

What’s in a Bushwacker? This frozen boozy milkshake relies on these ingredients blended to perfection (along with ice):

  • Rum: Dark rum is common in a Bushwacker, but you can use aged or white rum. We like aged rum (golden or añejo) for its subtle notes of vanilla, coconut, and caramel.
  • Kahlua: Kahlua is a coffee liqueur made in Mexico. You can use other types of coffee liqueur like Tia Maria.
  • Creme de cacao: Creme de cacao is a chocolate liqueur, available in both white and dark varieties. The original Bushwacker had dark creme de cacao, but white is easier to find and what we call for here.
  • Cream of coconut: This is a sweetened syrup for drinks, made with coconut cream and sugar and sold in squeeze bottles at liquor stores (or online). Make sure to buy cream of coconut, a sweetened syrup for drinks—not coconut cream, which is an entirely different product.
  • Milk: Any type of milk works here, like 2%, whole, or non-dairy milks like oat milk or almond milk.

Tip: If you accidentally buy coconut cream, you can still save your Bushwhacker! Use 1 oz coconut cream and 1 oz simple syrup in place of the 2 oz cream of coconut.

The story behind the name?

The Bushwacker was invented at the Ship’s Store Pub in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in 1975 as a tropical spin on the White Russian by bartender Angie Conigliaro and manager Tom Brokamp. Apparently they named it after a guest’s dog, an Afghan hound named Bushwack!

  • Place 2 ounces (¼ cup) of all liquid ingredients into a blender. Add 3 cups ice and blend.
  • Pour into a glass and garnish with a straw. Garnish with a maraschino cherry for a classic presentation. The drink tends to separate, which is normal: just stir it up with your straw while drinking!
  • It’s easily made dairy-free: There’s no dairy in any of the liqueurs in a Bushwacker drink, so it’s easy to convert it into a dairy free or vegan cocktail using oat milk.

This strawberry daiquiri had its first trial run one evening when our nephews visited for a cousin sleepover. We had homemade pizza (with our best pizza sauce and pizza dough) and movie night with popcorn. By the end of the night, the adults were exhausted!

Once the littles were in bed, we pulled out the blender to make homemade daiquiris. Man, were they good, and the perfect recipe for tired parents reclaiming the evening. Here’s how to make the best strawberry daiquiri recipe:

  • Step 1: Blend it up. Blend 1 pound frozen strawberries, ¼ cup lime juice, 6 tablespoons simple syrup, 1 cup white rum, 1 cup ice, and ⅛ teaspoon salt in a blender until smooth. Taste and adjust the sweetener to your tastes.
  • Step 2: Garnish and serve. Pour into a glass and serve garnished with a lime slice and frozen strawberry! You can use any type of glass, from a margarita glass to a simple cocktail glass.

  1. Step 1: Cut a notch in a lime wedge, then run it around the edge of a margarita glass. Dip the glass rim into kosher salt or sea salt.
  2. Step 2: Add tequila, Cointreau or Triple sec, lime juice, and simple syrup to a blender. Add ice and blend until smooth.

Description

Here’s the ultimate frozen margarita recipe: refreshingly simple with just 4 simple ingredients! Blend up a party-sized pitcher in minutes.


Ingredients

  • 6 ounces (¾ cup) tequila blanco or reposado
  • 4 ounces (½ cup) Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) fresh lime juice
  • 2 ounces (¼ cup) simple syrup
  • 4 ½ cups ice
  • For the rim: kosher salt or pink sea salt

Instructions

  1. Place the salt on a plate and wet the rim of the glasses (it’s easiest to cut a notch into a lime and run it around the glass). Dip the outside edge of the rims into the margarita salt. 
  2. Place the frozen ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth and fluffy. Pour into the prepared glasses and serve*. If desired, garnish with lime wedges. 

Notes

*Make ahead tip: To make this drink in advance, mix up the liquids prior to serving and refrigerate up to 2 days in advance. Blend up the drink right immediately serving. You can also freeze your glasses prior to serving to slow the drink from melting (freeze them 30 minutes to 2 hours in advance).

Fruity variations: Replace the ice in the recipe above with 4 cups frozen strawberries or diced frozen mango cubes.
