summer fridays 2020

Today is the last summer fridays post for 2020! It’s been a wacky summer but I’m so glad we kept the summer fridays tradition going. Thanks for being here!

EATING

My September kale salad. This is one of my favorite salads of all time. It’s a mix of late summer and super early fall produce (hello apples) and the flavor and texture can’t be beat.

DRINKING

September sangria!! It is TIME!

MAKING

A hot dog bar for the unofficial summer send off. What are you favorite toppings?

BAKING

These oatmeal baked apples. Have I mentioned how much I love apple season? Okay I’ll stop.

CRAVING

My salted honeycrisp fritters. These are unreal. I’m going to make them over on instagram today too!

LISTENING

To our summer fridays send off playlist! Do you have a favorite one from this summer?

READING

One to Watch! It’s our September book club pick. Loving it!

LOVING

Merritt’s fall capsule wardrobe. I look forward to these every season. Merritt’s style is incredible and timeless, and I also find that she shares such great neutral things that no matter what kind of style you love, her capsule helps. The amount of work she puts into this has to be crazy and I appreciate it so, so much! She also makes an actual capsule wardrobe seem doable to me.

PLANNING

I have the rest of the year’s recipes planned out (if you’ve been reading a while, then you know I work about a month or so ahead) and it feels amazing! It’s probably contributed to my fall feelings. Anything specific you’d like to see, aside from TONS of easy weeknight dinners?!

BURNING

This harvest candle from Target. It makes the entire house smell fantastic!

SHARING

A new video for the zucchini lasagna bolognese! If you haven’t made it yet, it is so wonderful. Definitely my favorite summer meal!

I hope you’re eating up the best of garden tomatoes right now! Here’s what’s up for the weekend.

EATING

This weekend I want to make my crispy buffalo cauliflower. Maybe my ramen noodle crunch salad too. Also, did you see the 33 weeknight meals I shared for back-to-school season?! Lots of great ones.

DRINKING

Since apple season has arrived, I’m eating alllll the honeycrisps and drinking this honeycrisp crush! Super refreshing.

MAKING

Hot honey pineapple wedges this weekend. The combo of sweet + heat is incredible.

BAKING

Have you ever made these black plum tarts with brown butter?! I live for a good puff pastry meal (there are multiples in my next book!) and this is a great treat.

CRAVING

My grilled peach and corn pizza. If you haven’t tried it yet, you must! Other than that, I’m really craving fall flavors. No, I don’t want summer to end, but with so much unpredictability in the next few months, I’m just craving a nostalgic and familiar taste!

LISTENING

To the best Nancy Meyers movie playlist. These songs just give me all the warm and fuzzy feelings.

READING

The Perfect Marriage. I found this via people sharing it on tiktok. It sucked me in right away and is really good!

WATCHING

I am rewatching The West Wing. I mean, it’s just the best. Have you been here long enough to remember when I watched it for the first time?!

LOVING

Absolutely love these 6 things Mel Robbins does when she wakes up anxious.

SHARING

A new video for my creamed spinach mac and cheese! This is a great way to sneak in all those greens.

SHOPPING

I was influenced this week by TIBAL to buy this foot measuring thing for the kids. Um. WHY have I never thought of this before?! I used to get the kids’ feet measured at Nordstrom every few months (it’s crazy how often their size can change) but since we haven’t gone anywhere, I’ve been stumped on buying them shoes. This is brilliant and much more affordable that I expected!

EATING

My grilled cinnamon toast with figs and ricotta. It is literally the best toast to ever exist. I also have been loving my oldie-but-goodie BLT chopped salad!

What are you cooking this weekend?

DRINKING

A bubbly jam margarita. This is the best because you can use whatever jam you have on hand!

MAKING

My grilled veg orzo with smashed feta dressing. It’s been a few weeks and now I need a fix. Ha!

BAKING

I know it’s early but I just can’t stop thinking about my pumpkin dream cake. I am literally considering baking it this weekend.

CRAVING

A super simple summer cheese plate like this one with goat cheese stuffed figs. I think I have to make it tonight.

LISTENING

To the feel good friday playlist. It’s one of my all-time favorites.

READING

Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover. I’m only at the beginning but it’s sucked me already. I adore her books! Also bonus: you can read it for free on your kindle right now! And here is a great list of Black authors to read from too.

LOVING

Whitney English’s printables. She is the creator of the Day Designer planner and if you remember waaaay back in the day, that was my favorite planner for years! I adore the free printables she shares, (hello, annual declutter list, staying at home with kids, meal planners, business plan, etc) and also really enjoy her HEART goals concept.

SHOPPING

The Nordstrom sale is finally live for everyone, but so many of the great things have sold out. (Side note: I find that they usually restock them after the sale and then they go on sale AGAIN closer to the end of season!) There’s a little sephora sale happening right now too! You can find all my favorites here!

SHARING

A new video for my salted brown butter chocolate chip cookie bars. Go make ’em!

A big old hummus platter for the weekend! This is our favorite kind of Saturday lunch. And maaaybe this heirloom tomato and burrata grilled cheese? I mean… can’t stop with the tomatoes.

DRINKING

A pitcher of pinot grigio sangria. So refreshing.

MAKING

My one pot peach basil chicken. Everyone flips over this, it’s delicious! Also thinking of making my zucchini pie. It’s super good. Sort of like a frittata, but better.

BAKING

A batch of my garlic butter naan. I mean, it’s not REALLY baking, but you know.

CRAVING

These grilled peaches with honey lavender whipped ricotta. Incredible.

LISTENING

To one of my favorite playlists of all time: My Summer Kitchen! It’s a dreamy one.

Our August book club pick, The School of Essential Ingredients!

WATCHING

This IGTV clip from Tabitha Brown on tradition. I LOVED this.

LOVING

This interview with Jennifer Garner on quarantine times.

LAUGHING

Please tell me you follow Matt Buechele on instagram. He is hilarious. This had me rolling. So did this!

WEARING

Does body cream count as wearing? I am officially obsessed with this beauty butter. If you have dry skin – or heck, just regular skin! – you will LOVE it.

SHOPPING

Did you grab anything at the Nordstrom sale? There are so many classic basics in my favorites that I already have from years past, but I did get a few new things. Once it all gets here, I’ll go in and update the post with what I love and don’t love.

SHARING

There’s a new video up for my melted zucchini baked ziti. This is such a fun twist on a classic pasta dish to share. You gotta try it!

EATING

This weekend I’m going into reset mode after being on carbcation. I’m thinking of prepping my summer chickpea salad, making my blueberry summer salad and this heirloom and grilled peach pasta. I also may make these steak and potato skewers for sunday night dinner.

DRINKING

Since we’ve been on the topic of frozen drinks this week, I have my layered watermelon coconut shakes on my mind!

MAKING

This poppy seed fruit salad for the weekend. This is such a refreshing treat and just so good. The kids love it too! I’m also going to do a batch of my copycat chipotle corn salsa.

BAKING

Bursting blueberry coffee cake muffins for the weekend. Okay we can still have a little treat.

CRAVING

These marinated grilled veggies with avocado whipped feta. They are the best.

LISTENING

To this mellow moves playlist. Perfect for the weekend!

READING

Well, I’m still reading The Last Flight. I had my first reading lull of the entire year on this vacation – guys, I couldn’t read ONE PAGE! While the kids are at a great age for the beach in that they can play nonstop, they are also nonstop the rest of the time and I just didn’t get a second and was too tired at night. Eeep! Hoping to finish it this weekend.

LOVING

The zen habits website. Seriously this is the best self care there is. I get lost in the site!

WEARING

The presidio dress from athleta. I actually ordered this back in May and it took forever to get to me – I just got it two weeks ago. But it was perfect for the beach and is just overall really cute and comfy. It’s definitely on the more casual side… you know I take my black summer dresses seriously. Ha.

SHOPPING

The Nordstrom sale! I shared all of my favorites earlier this week and will update them as the week goes on. There are so many things I LOVE in this sale. I mean, things I’ve used forever. I also keep seeing new things appear (especially in the kids section) so that’s exciting.

LEARNING

How to do reels on Instagram. What do you guys think? Most of me is like “UGH it’s another thing” but I’m also happy it’s in the IG app. Here are some details on it!

I wish every summer friday looked like this!

EATING

My tomato toast on repeat. Seriously it is THAT good.

DRINKING

If you haven’t made the whipped coconut cream cold brew that I shared this week, you have to try! I have been craving one ever since. It’s delightful! If you want a cocktail, I highly suggest these watermelon rosé margaritas.

MAKING

We’re traveling (by car!) today, so I made a few things for our trip. First, a big batch of homemade pesto. Next, a big batch of homemade ranch. Both of these things are to have while we are there. I really wish I would have made a batch of chipotle caramel chex mix! We will be cooking most nights on our trip, so those few things will help.

BAKING

This sesame pretzel focaccia is an absolute dream. Try it this weekend!

P.S. I’m also sharing a step by step of my chewy oatmeal chocolate chip zucchini cookies on instagram this afternoon.

CRAVING

More s’mores. These chocolate chip cookie s’mores bars are insane.

LISTENING

To our beach vibes playlist! It’s so summery.

Also, to the Michelle Obama Podcast! So freaking excited about this.

READING

The Last Flight! Just started it last night and I am hooked. I also shared what I read in July right here. And you can find my whole summer reading list here. Finally, I encourage you to read this incredible piece (NYT) that John Lewis wrote to be published after he died. I have read it multiple times and every time, it gives me chills.

LOVING

The colorful life of Ally Love. Ally has been my favorite peloton instructor since I got the bike, but as soon as I followed her on instagram, I fell in love with her even more. She is such a bright light and radiates positivity. I just adore her!

SHARING

There’s a new video here for my life-changing tomato pie. We just made it this week and I forgot how absolutely incredible it is!

WEARING

I mentioned it in my July favorites, but I have been LIVING in these freedom moses slides. I can’t believe how much I love them. Also, this coconut hydration body oil is fantastic. It smells wonderful and is so moisturizing. It’s definitely my beauty pick for July!

SHOPPING

After your feedback last week, I will definitely share my Nordstrom favorites next week when the sale begins! Actually, lots of things in the sale have been in my favorites each month and I’m excited to see so many good things on the site.

TRAVELING

We are heading to Northern Michigan today and it seems very surreal. I know how much of a luxury it is right now that we are going to have a change of scenery. For most of the year we didn’t think we could go on this trip. But we’ve had our place booked since our trip last year and we waited to see. If you’ve followed the trip in the past (you can see here!), you probably know it’s a naturally very distanced trip. Plus, we drive there. Funnily enough, until I was probably 12 or so, I don’t even think we ate at a restaurant when we went. My great grandparents lived there and we would have dinner made every night with tons of summer Michigan produce. So I think it’s going to be a very retro vacation in that sense. Feeling very lucky that we get to go.

Now that is a perfect summer friday pour! What’s on your agenda this weekend?

EATING

My summer house salad. It’s loaded with summer garden vegetables and so good! I’m also in the mood for this pistachio pesto pasta salad. And my lime loaded shrimp fajitas!

DRINKING

This cajun peach lemonade! You can spike it if you wish. Otherwise, I think it will be a rosé weekend.

MAKING

My beer battered fish tacos with mango margarita salsa. These are always a hit.

BAKING

My chewy oatmeal chocolate chip zucchini cookies. Obsessed with them. If you want a no-bake option, these salted pretzel s’mores crunch bars are unreal.

CRAVING

Shake Shack like whoa. I really wish we had one around here! It’s basically the only burger place I adore. The good news is that I did recreate their smoke shack burger – with my cherry pepper bacon cheeseburger. Try it!

LISTENING

To this perfect golden hour playlist. I love it. And who else is freaking over the Taylor Swift album?! With a quick run through listen, I’m already obsessed. The minute we started playing the songs, Max yelled “that’s Taylor Swift!” Her music is Emilia’s favorite too!

READING

Rodham! And I’m loving it. It’s like I knew that I would because American Wife is one of my all-time favorite books. Also! If you haven’t joined our book club yet, you still have time! Next week we’re discussing our July pick, Party of Two.

WEARING

Masks! I mean, hello 2020. I am loving the athleta masks. I only wish they had different colors! You know, like neon pink or tie dye, haha. If I have to wear one outside for an extended period of time, I prefer the paper ones because they are more breathable. But what I really wanted to tell you about are the kids masks. My kids actually love the masks – probably because they can see them on each other and think it’s so funny. Plus, they have characters on them. I don’t really love character clothing but these are def winners. I found these ones back in April and have since ordered more, especially for Max when/if he goes back to school. These are the masks the kids had on in this post. The way they stay around the ears is perfect – and not uncomfortable at all.

LOVING

I just discovered that The Kitchn does this one hour meal prep series – I love it! My next book has a ton of meal prep secrets and I can’t wait for you to see it. Coming to you next spring.

SHARING

Please tell me you’ve seen this Hamilton-inspired tribute to Dr Fauci. I am obsessed.

SHOPPING

The Nordstrom sale! The preview is going to be up today. What are your thoughts on the sale this year? I always find a lot of great basics (kid stuff, blankets, my favorite t shirts, pajamas, etc) but really haven’t been shopping much at all given the current circumstances. I usually do a big Nordstrom picks post over on crumbs – would you still like to see one?

This summer Friday would be absolute perfection if I could get my hands on a lobster roll!

EATING

Tons of these grilled vegetables. It’s our weekend staple. I also think I’m going to make this grilled thai pork tenderloin. And a batch of my smoky summer chicken salad.

DRINKING

A delish classic margarita. My recipe is my all-time favorite. If you want a mocktail, these iced peach coladas are amazing.

MAKING

A lobster grilled cheese. Is anyone else craving a perfect buttery lobster roll like I am? This is the next best thing. I also just can’t stop thinking about the hot cheetos street corn. Pretty sure I’m doing it tonight…. again.

BAKING

These little peach hand pies! They are so, so good with vanilla ice cream. Also, my cherry cheesecake brownies. Those are straight up irresistible.

CRAVING

My lavender latte ice cream ever since sharing the coffee oreo ice cream yesterday.

LISTENING

To a fun little 80s playlist. Anything to take me out of 2020, ha! This one is awesome.

READING

Hello Summer and I was hooked right from the start. This has been a slow reading month because I’ve had to spend a great deal of time on my book edits, but I’m slowly getting back to books. You can follow me on goodreads to see what I’m reading in real time! Oh oh oh and did you see that The Vanishing Half is going to be an HBO series?! So pumped.

WATCHING

This Brene Brown video about trusting someone. It’s so good.

WEARING

I’m wearing these on my feet, so I guess this counts. A few weeks ago I got a pair of On cloudswift shoes for walking/running outside (like barely running, I hate to run! I will do a walk/run combo or just a long walk) – I LOVE THEM. It’s no secret that I adore my adidas ultraboosts, but I mostly wear them in the kitchen, out and about – I hate to destroy them outside. I’ve tried different Nike pairs here and there but NONE of them offer the support like the ultraboosts do. Well these… I bought them strictly for outside and they are incredible. So comfortable and insanely supportive!

BUYING

I get a lot of great facebook and instagram ads, but rarely buy anything from them. However! A few months ago I saw an ad for Dr Brite sanitizing wipes for preorder. This was in the middle not being able to find any sort of sanitizing wipes, so I ordered. They came last week and I LOVE them. The smell is amazing – peppermint and eucalyptus – and they are so much better to keep in the car than regular old clorox wipes or something that reeks of alcohol.

SHARING

A new video for our favorite baked beans. These are SO GOOD. There is a video in the post above the recipe and you can see exactly how we make them!

LOVING

That commodity fragrance is back! If you are a longtime reader and enjoy my favorites posts, then you’ll know that Commodity Gold is one of my all-time favorite perfumes. It’s incredible. The company folded a year or two ago and I missed getting the Gold fragrance on clearance at sephora. I randomly searched for a dupe for that perfume last week and found the website – and all the perfumes back up and running! I AM THRILLED. I already ordered a Gold travel size. Woohoo. Now remember when I was talking about my quarantine signature scent…

DRAWING

Up a schedule for the upcoming school year. Remember when everyone made fun of those crazy color coded family/kid schedules that were floating around instagram the first week of quarantine? Like back when we thought it would really only be two or three weeks? Yes, me too! Well… now I feel like we won’t survive without one of those and I’m on a mission to make the best one for us that isn’t insane. Tips please!

Last night I started The Boyfriend Project! What are you reading? I had a slow reading week because I spent a ton of time finishing edits for my next book! I hope to get lost in a book or two this weekend. P.S. my summer reading list is right here.

LOVING

This piece on Latham Thomas. Her company Mama Glow is incredible and so inspiring.

WEARING

I lived in these neon slides this week. It’s hilarious, because I really hate birkenstocks and then I go a get a pair of these! I thought they would make such good pool slides and they are also great shoes for watering my plants and herbs. Ha. Also… tie dye pajamas. So I can match Emilia.

BUYING

My z supply obsessed continues and this tank is amazing. It’s so soft and flowy and perfect! Also, I bought this dress after Lacy got it and it’s amazing. Another great option for super hot days and nights and it comes in the cutest colors. It’s definitely dressier than the z supply one I told you about previously. P.S. Lacy is pregnant (!!! omg !!! best news in the unvierse!!!) and it works great for maternity too!

Firecracker cupcakes! These are confetti cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and poprocks. Total winner. And this isn’t baking… but it is a treat: make this red white and blue party snack mix for the weekend.
