When we first started our Shop back in 2013 (as Amanda and Merrill write here) we thought we had it figured out. We’d fill it up with beautiful and practical things made by interesting, passionate people who shared the same values as us. We’d present the right mix of products on the site and see how they were received—and if they did well, we’d keep them.

When Food52 began its journey—as Amanda and Merrill write here—we were trying to build a business around a crowd-sourced cookbook. Building a community was not necessarily the plan. However, in a matter of months, maybe even weeks, that changed: You helped us figure out what Food52 would become.

Twentieth Anniversary of the Blog!

I know I should have baked a cake, or rather, someone else should have baked a cake. But no matter. (Okay, so it matters a little…) I’m happy to celebrate the blog turning twenty this month! I’m not sure how the twenty-year mark snuck up so fast, but it did. Who knew when I started posting a bunch of random thoughts, ramblings, and recipes online…

Where would we be without cookbooks? Our favorites, new and old, occupy several shelves in our kitchen and form towers on our nightstands. Our cookbooks teach us countless skills and techniques that we use nearly every day. Cookbooks inspire us to roll up our sleeves and try new recipes, as they become increasingly dog-eared, sauce-stained, well-loved in the process. Our co-founders, Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs, first met while researching and writing the Essential New York Times Cookbook. Yes, that's right—because of cookbooks, Food52 was born!
