Homemade gyro seasoning blends spices and herbs to infuse dishes with a Mediterranean flair. I developed this seasoning after visiting the Greek island of Grecos.

I gained a lot of inspiration during this trip, and yes, thanks to this, my Greek salad perfectly matches the taste. In it, I’m sharing a little secret that I got from the owner of one of the local restaurants. She told me because of my curious nature, I recognized a specific herb.

What is Gyro Seasoning

If you’ve never tried making your own spices, you absolutely must start experimenting. I love creating my blends because they allow me to give dishes the exact flavor that I want. The first spice blend I made twelve years ago was Homemade Gingerbread Spice. I love the aroma and flavor it adds, and the cakes I make with it are always the first to be sold at every school party. These are just some of the additional benefits of making your own spices at home—the aroma lingers for a long time.

Gyro Seasoning is the perfect combination of herbs and spices to enhance the flavors of chicken, lamb, beef, or pork.
With homemade Gyro Seasoning, you can enjoy the taste of the Mediterranean without leaving home.

How to choose the best ingredients for Gyro Seasoning

Make sure to dry all spices to the best quality available. Store them in a sealed container away from light to preserve their aroma. When purchasing spices from a store, consider how they are stored.

Salt: The best would be kosher salt, which not only adds flavor but also tenderizes the meat and contains many valuable minerals.

Sweet Paprika: In addition to its health properties, it adds aroma to the meat and enhances its taste.

Garlic: Although garlic is not very noticeable, it gives the dish a characteristic taste and aroma. It blends perfectly with the rest of the spices, giving Gyro Seasoning a slightly spicy flavor.

Coriander adds a slightly sweet, spicy flavor to spices, which is characteristic of Indian and Mediterranean cuisines. It doesn’t dominate this spice, but it is a great complement. I wouldn’t say I like its soapy flavor in its fresh form, but I love it in this seasoning.

White Mustard Seeds are a great complement to meat, perfect for marinating and enhancing its flavor. They are extremely aromatic, and the amount of spiciness is perfectly balanced to enhance the flavor of the meat without overpowering it.

Majoram: I can’t imagine a spice for meat without marjoram, and as you can see, the Greeks do, too. This amount doesn’t dominate the taste, but it still goes perfectly with the other spices. Marjoram improves our digestion, and Gyros is quite a fatty dish. For that reason, it is in this seasoning.

Rosemary: is another spice without which I cannot imagine seasoning meats and soups. Here, it adds flavor and aroma, perfectly complementing the rest of the spices.

Juniper Berry: The next spice provides a distinct taste and aroma that cannot be substituted for any other.

Onion Dry: another spice that I add to marinate meat when I don’t use fresh.

Chili: The amount is perfect here: not too much so that the meat doesn’t burn like Hungarian goulash and not too little so that the spiciness is still noticeable. The chili enhances the other hot spices.

Allspice Grounds: has a spicy flavor similar to that of ginger and cinnamon, with a hint of heat. When ground, it enhances the dish with more flavor and complements other spices in Gyro Seasoning.

Clove Grounds: are not only suitable for sweet dishes; in small quantities, they also blend perfectly to enhance the flavor of meat further.

Basil: A pinch adds lightness and freshness to the spice with a slight lemon note.

Savoy: goes perfectly with the spicy seasonings in this set.

Black Pepper: it is a distinctly hot spice that enriches this Gyro Seasoning note.

Dry Parsley Leaves: this is my hint of flavor that I added. It perfectly complements the hot flavors in this spice blend.

Step-by-Step for Gyro Seasoning

Ideally, you should put everything in a blender and grind it. However, such a combination would cause the spice to mix too much and lose its individuality where the flavors intertwine.

Step 1: For best results, it is recommended to combine all ground and dried spices, such as salt, sweet paprika, garlic, coriander, marjoram, rosemary, dried onion, chili, turmeric, basil, savory, and dried parsley leaves in one bowl.

Step 2: Next, put the remaining whole spices, such as white mustard seeds, juniper berries, allspice, cloves, and black pepper, into a mortar and grind them until fine, or use a coffee grinder.

Step 3: Finally, combine all the ground and whole spices in a bowl and transfer the mixture to an airtight container, storing it in a dark place to preserve the spices’ aroma.

Enjoy!

Sides To Serve

Gyro seasoning is perfect for chicken, lamb, beef, or pork. It gives them a distinctive flavor. The perfectly matched spices in this mixture bring out the best in the meat, allowing you to enjoy its taste fully. I like to use this seasoning for chicken, so I often marinate it in the seasoning when I plan to prepare Air Fryer Chicken Breast, which pairs perfectly with Tzatziki Sauce or Chicken Alfredo Linguine. I usually use this spice to prepare chicken for the Chicken Dried Tomatoes Green Olives Salad. My daughter loves grilled chicken pieces, especially when seasoned with Gyro Seasoning and served with a Salad with Roasted Seeds. You can also use it to season meat for Gyros or any Mediterranean dish.

If you enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, tzatziki sauce is the perfect complement. If you haven’t tried it yet, you must give this quick and easy sauce a go!

 What is Tzatziki sauce

Tzaziki is another sauce based on thick yogurt from Mediterranean countries. There are different versions of it, depending on the country of origin. The most popular is the version with yogurt, cucumber, olive oil, and dill. Sometimes, we also come across a version with mint added.

The version with mint is very popular in Turkey, but in this version, Turks sprinkle it with sumac, similar to Labneh.

In Bulgaria, a similar recipe sprinkled with walnuts makes a cold soup served on hot days. I ate it and was delighted with it. Ideally, in my version, I will replace the walnuts with pecans, which I love.

There are as many ideas for tzatziki as there are countries. My version of the recipe is simple and tasty, and now you can invite it to your home, too.

Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients

How to choose the best ingredients for Tzatziki

Greek Yogurt: If you don’t have Greek Yogurt, don’t worry. You can make it yourself from regular natural Yogurt. However, make sure it’s good quality yogurt, with only milk and live bacteria cultures. Strain the natural yogurt for 6 hours, and it will take on the consistency of Greek Yogurt, perfect for Tzatziki.

Cucumber: Whether I peel a cucumber depends on the quality of the cucumber I have at home. If it has thin skin, I wash it thoroughly and do not peel it; if it has thick skin, I peel it before grating it on a grater.

Garlic: Is best when fresh because it has a distinct flavor and aroma.

Olive oil: Choose the best one from the first pressing, I love olive oils from Greece or Italy but I also wouldn’t mind the one from Spain. Choose your best one!

Tips and Tricks Tzatziki

  • I prefer making this sauce in just one bowl to minimize the number of dishes used while cooking. Follow my step-by-step instructions, and I’ll walk you through the recipe.

Sides To Serve Tzatziki Sauce

You can serve Tzatziki with naan bread and pita, or it is ideal for fresh or grilled vegetables such as peppers, carrots, eggplant, and zucchini. Roasted, grilled meat and burgers as a sauce or addition are also ideal for toasted French bread or sourdough bread.

Tzatziki Sauce Step-by-Step Instructions

Tzatziki is a quick and easy sauce for all kinds of dishes. It has a creamy, yogurt flavor, and the flavors of fresh cucumber, garlic, and dill mix.

So, let’s start this adventure with a super easy recipe.

You will need a bowl, a large strainer, a coarse grater, a chopping board, and a good knife. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Peel or grate the cucumbers whole, then add salt and apple cider vinegar. This helps the cucumbers release their juice quickly, which speeds up the tzatziki sauce-making process. The more we squeeze the cucumbers, the less watery the sauce will be, resulting in a creamier consistency.

Step 2: Wait 2-3 minutes, then strain the cucumbers in a fine sieve. Transfer the cucumbers to a sieve and strain them over the same bowl.

Step 3: Pour the cucumber juice into a glass or jar for later use in delicious cucumber-based smoothies.

Step 4: Then return the drained cucumbers to the bowl.

Step 5: Add the Greek Yogurt

Cucumber with yogurt and garlic

Step 6: Add the minced garlic.

Tzatziki sauce the last step

Step 7: Mix well, then add the olive oil.

Enjoy!

How to store Tzatziki

It’s best to prepare Tzatziki sauce 30 minutes in advance so that all the ingredients can blend and the garlic can become stronger. If you have any leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for 2-3 days in a tightly closed container to prevent the yogurt from drying out. When you take it out, the water will separate from the yogurt, but you just need to mix it well to combine everything again. I love tzatziki sauce and often make it in large quantities, so I have tested storing it in the fridge.

Substitute for Tzatziki Sauce

Any sauce made with yogurt and sour cream can be a substitute. One suggestion is Crispy smashed potatoes with yogurt dip or Labneh.

Labneh

You can also make tzatziki from vegetarian yogurt; it will taste good, too.

FAQ

What type of yogurt is best?

Greek yogurt is ideal for tzatziki due to its thickness and creamy texture. If you use regular yogurt, strain it using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to remove excess liquid and achieve a thicker consistency.

Can I make Tzatziki in advance?

Yes, you can make tzatziki ahead of time! It will keep in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Just stir it well before serving as some liquid may separate.

Is Tzatziki gluten-free?

Yes, tzatziki is naturally gluten-free, as long as the yogurt and other ingredients are gluten-free (which they typically are).

How do I prevent the Tzatziki from being watery?

Grate the cucumber and then squeeze out the excess moisture by pressing it between paper towels or using a cheesecloth. This step is key to preventing a watery dip.

Can I freeze Tzatziki?

Freezing is not recommended, as yogurt tends to separate and change texture when thawed. It’s best enjoyed fresh or after being stored in the fridge for a few days.

Is Tzatziki keto?

Yes, Tzatziki sauce is a keto dish, but it depends on what you serve it with. If it is grilled or roasted meat, then tzatziki sauce fits perfectly into the keto or low-carb diet assumptions.

Moist Keto Chocolate Muffins is a unique proposition for chocolate lovers. It is healthy and will make a dessert, not go to the sides.

This taste is complemented by chocolate topping and dried strawberries. Which fits not only perfectly but also perfectly breaks the chocolate color of cupcakes. After all, it has long been known that you also eat with your eyes.

How to choose the best ingredients for Moist Keto Chocolate Muffins

Eggs: Eggs always select the best you have, fresh. Here, the best will be the size of L or M. If you have a smaller one, just give one more egg.

It will be good when the eggs are at room temperature.

Natural yogurt: I always choose Greek yogurt because its thick, creamy texture suits me best. The only thing in this recipe will be any natural yogurt without additives.

Greek yogurt must be at room temperature.

Heavy Cream: I prefer heavy cream made from dairy products, but coconut milk will also be perfect for this if you like the combination of chocolate and coconuts.

The cream has to be sweet and yogurts are probably not suitable because cream and coconut milk give the muffins a creamy taste and ensure that they will stay fresh for a long time.

Ground Almonds: You can choose ground almonds but in the luxurious version, almond flour. The taste and appearance will be that the ground almonds are not as perfectly ground as almond flour and you will see small white dots in the muffins.

It doesn’t bother me personally. You choose yourself. Generally, ground almonds are more available.

Cocoa: You choose traditional low-fat cocoa, not any chocolate drinks. Cocoa not only gives the muffins a chocolate flavor but also makes them fresh and fluffy. Cornstarch, which I always add, has a similar purpose in my muffins.

Erythritol/Xylitol: The sweetener you choose is up to you. Both xylitol and erythritol are suitable for this baking.

The former provides additional calories but has a taste more similar to sugar, and the latter is calorie-free. You add the same amount to both.

Tips and Tricks for Moist Keto Chocolate Muffins

  • If you don’t have almond flour or ground almonds. Another substitute may be coconut flour, which is very popular in the keto diet. Remember that you add less of it because it absorbs macro products very much. I would add about 85 gr, i.e. 2/3 cup
  • You don’t like butter? You can replace them with coconut oil in chocolate icing

Sides To Serve for Moist Keto Chocolate Muffins

Chocolate cupcakes will be perfect for afternoon coffee for dessert.

You can serve them e.g. hot with a scoop of ice cream, not just cold as the recipe says. Then they will resemble fudge chocolate cake with ice cream. Of course, the ice cream must also be keto if you are passionate about this way of eating. Of course, you can try keto ice cream from my recipe, which was based on the original gelato recipe from Italy.

Another ideal way is to pour hot chocolate icing over the cupcakes themselves. Then the icing will be perfect for soaking into the cupcakes while eating.

Substitute Moist Keto Chocolate Muffins

If you are not on a keto diet and you like traditional recipes and you are a fan of chocolate muffins, be sure to try my recipes for Moist Double Dark Chocolate Muffins or Milk Chocolate Cupcake. These two recipes reign supreme in my house, my children especially love the second one.

Another cupcake recipe where chocolate is king will be the Fit Brownie Date Muffins version. The perfect recipe for a healthy snack to replenish energy after training. You will find only natural recipes here, without a gram of flour.

Or maybe I just feel like drinking chocolate, so be sure to try the Spicy Dark Hot Chocolate recipe. Chocolate flavor with a bit of chili. This is what I love.

Keto Chocolate Dried Strawberries Muffins is a unique proposition for chocolate lovers. It is healthy and will make a dessert, not go to the sides.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Servings 12 pieces
Calories 132kcal

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 120 ml natural yogurt
  • 120 ml cream
  • 120 g ground almonds
  • 40 g cocoa
  • 70 g erythritol/xylitol
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

Chocolate Topping

  • 1 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp sweetener

Instructions

  • The most important thing for cupcakes to come out perfect is that all the ingredients must be at room temperature.
  • The next step will be to add cocoa and almond flour mixed with baking powder.
  • Mix everything on low speed, and put it into muffin molds.
  •  Bake at 180 degrees C for about 20-25 minutes.

Chocolate Topping

  • We put all the ingredients in a saucepan and dissolved on a prolonged fire to combine the ingredients and dissolve the sweetener.
  • I recommend xylitol or stevia in this version because erythritol can crystallize after cooling down and spoil our flavors.
  • Cool the muffins and pour the topping, sprinkle with dried strawberries.
  • Muffins prepared this way will be soft for at least a few days, even up to 5-6. However, they are too tasty to wait so long for someone to eat them. Especially chocolate lovers. Even non-keto people can't resist this taste.
