From how often to how much, and the best ways to get organized, I share all my step-by-step pantry restocking tips so you can have an organized pantry that serves your family’s needs.

An Organized Pantry Makes Life Easier

A functional, organized and beautiful pantry makes me so happy! It also makes me likely to use and get creative with the ingredients that we have on hand. No matter the size of your pantry, keeping it organized and well-stocked is a great way to set you up for success when it comes to feeding your family on a daily basis.

A well-organized pantry will help you have everything you need when you need it. It saves money, too. Organization can prevent you from overbuying ingredients that you already have on hand because they’re hidden in messy shelves.

A well organized pantry.

I appreciate being able to have the pantry space to store so much and see everything and stock it so well for my family and my business. I realize that having a pantry of this size and stocked so well is a privilege that I don’t take lightly. I’m incredibly thankful each time I walk in it and use it.

I’m so excited to share my step-by-step pantry restocking process and easy tips so you can have an organized pantry that serves your family’s needs.

INSERT VIDEO??

Plan Ahead

Establishing a schedule for restocking my pantry was a MUST. I’m a busy mom and business owner and if it’s not on the calendar it doesn’t get done. Restocking your pantry regularly helps ensure you always have ingredients on hand for meals and snacks. By staying organized and keeping track of the ingredients in your pantry, you’ll always be well-stocked and ready for any recipe.

Weekly, I do a small restock. This includes items that we enjoy the most often like bread, tortillas, refried beans, protein bars, and granola.

Monthly, I do a medium restock. This includes commonly used pantry staples like canned beans, salsas, pasta, pasta sauce, packaged snacks, cereals and chips.

Every quarter, I do a big restock,  which includes deep cleaning the shelves and all containers as well as refilling/replacing all baking supplies, grains like rice and beans, board building supplies and seasonal items like:

  • Fall – all things baking, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice.
  • Winter – more holiday baking, hearty soup making, peppermint and hot chocolate makings.
  • Spring – quinoa, couscous, dried fruits, nuts, light sauces, tomatoes and anything that will go into a salad.
  • Summer – fun snacks, pastas, tortillas, condiments for cookouts, and s’mores makings.

This big restock really takes into account our eating and meal patterns during that season of the year/life. It’s surprising how much our pantry staples and overall stock changes each quarter based on the season of the year, our work schedules, the kids’ schedules, the projects I’m working on for The BakerMama and the growth spurts that the kids might be going through.

Pantry Organization Steps

Declutter and Discard

First, declutter. I go one section at a time so it’s not overwhelming and I can focus on the ingredients in that section. Discard anything that’s expired or that tastes stale. I usually try to do this when I’m hungry for a snack because I’ll snack my way through the pantry.

Donate any unopened, non-perishable foods that are still good but that you won’t realistically use to a local food bank or take them to the teachers’ lounge at your kid’s school.

Clean and Reorganize

Next, clean everything up. Wipe down the cabinets. Wash and dry any empty containers so they’ll be clean and ready to be filled with fresh ingredients. Group similar items together. Bring items to the front that will expire soon so they’re used first.

A hand holding a scrub brush, cleaning a clear container in a sink.

Take Inventory and Make a List

Then get an idea of what you have and what you need. On a weekly basis, I quickly check the pantry for items we’re low on and add them to my shopping list. I use clear and labeled bins so I can see everything and know when something is running low.

I plan our meals around what we have on hand or what we need to use up before it expires. I keep a dedicated notes section on my phone for groceries so if I’ve noticed that we need something before I take inventory, I will add it to that list. It also helps to keep a running list of your pantry staples that you update regularly and check for each time you grocery shop.

Empty clear containers in a pantry.

I go into my pantry when making my grocery list so everything is in front of me for easy checking and determining how much we need of each item. I use the term “shop my pantry” a lot before I actually go “shop the store”. When I’m planning out our family meals and developing recipes for the blog, I create my list of everything I’ll need and then I go “shop my pantry” and check off everything that I have in the pantry first and then I’ll go to the store or order everything else I need online.

It also helps to have “sections” to your pantry similar to how you shop them at the grocery store. That way when you open or walk into your pantry, you know which section to go to for the ingredient you’re looking for. For example, I have a canned goods section for all the different tomatoes and a canned goods section for all the different beans and I don’t mix those canned goods so I know exactly where to check for certain tomatoes or certain beans. Having these sections also makes it so easy to check for ingredients when creating my weekly or quarterly shopping lists and makes restocking the pantry a breeze when I get home from the store and start putting everything in its designated section.

A pantry section with cans and pasta.

Shop

I find that placing my grocery order online for pick-up or delivery insures that I don’t forget anything and that I don’t overbuy once at the store as I’m easily tempted to buy more than we need or have room for when browsing the aisles.

I love that my grocery store app has custom lists built into it for each section of my pantry and fridge so I can easily go to each section and add the ingredients we need to my cart. It also tracks all of my previous purchases from that store and has them in the order of how frequent I buy each item so I’ll quickly double check my past purchases to see if there’s something I missed when taking inventory.

Restock

Finally, once I have all of my groceries ready to restock, I organize them by section throughout the kitchen or on the dining table and then I work by section to put everything where it needs to go in the pantry.

If there are some items in a container that are still good, I’ll pour those items into a bowl, add the new ingredients and then top the container off with the ingredients that need to be used first. I do this a lot with our chocolate chips, peanut butter filled pretzels, granola and other items I know we use regularly.

Label and Date

When fully restocking containers with items that tend to stay in our pantry for longer periods of time as we use them like rice, some pastas, some baking items, some nuts, etc., I label the back of the container with these removable labels and write the expiration date so we don’t have to guess whether something is still fresh.

A label being placed and a canister of brown rice.

Extras and Emergency Goods

I like to keep large storage baskets with “extras” at the top or bottom of our pantry with longer shelf life items that I buy in bulk and use to replenish items in containers as they get used. I also put larger items in these baskets that won’t fit on the shelves or items that we don’t use as often.

I also make sure we always have a good stock of emergency items like canned soups, canned vegetables, peanut butter, oatmeal packets and granola bars.

A functional and well-stocked pantry makes any home cook’s job that much simpler. I hope these tips help you organize and re-stock your pantry so that it’s as easy to look at as it is easy to use. Fast Facts!

  • Published on September 24, 2019
  • Over 11,000 reviews and 5 stars on Amazon
  • Beautiful Boards is sold in over 35 countries!
  • Beautiful Boards has been published in 5 languages so far: English, French, German, Spanish, and Dutch. For the foreign co-editions of Beautiful Boards, we actually took out the American Flag Board and replaced it with a Spanish Tapas Board that I created.
  • We had so much fun putting together the Behind the Scenes of creating Beautiful Boards. From the first discussion with my publisher in 2018 to 21 hour days creating, photographing and writing the content for this book, I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done, but I can confidently say I don’t regret any of it!

Did You Know?

The original working title for my first cookbook was Boards Galore. We even had a cover designed and had even announced that it would be called Boards Galore, but I felt neither one really captured the creativity and beauty of the boards within this book. We went through several rounds of title changes and cover options before everyone fell in love with Beautiful Boards and a cover that really showcases the stunning boards within it. The perfect title and cover, in my opinion! Here’s what the initial cover was drafted to look like:

A Best-Seller!

When Beautiful Boards was first released in September 2019, we couldn’t keep it in stock. We had no idea how popular it would be and each time we did a reprint, it would sell out rapidly. People were mad they couldn’t get their hands on it and I was obviously frustrated because I wanted everyone to have a copy! This went on for a few years, actually, until we finally figured out how many to print at a time to meet the growing demands.

Beautiful Boards is still a best-selling cookbook on Amazon and at most major retailers year after year, for 5 years now, and rightfully so. Even though it’s being enjoyed in hundreds of thousands of homes worldwide, I believe there are still so many homes out there that would love it and enjoy it and be so inspired by it as well, so I’ll keep sharing it!

My Favorite Boards from Beautiful Boards

This is like picking a favorite child! I truly love every single board in this book. I have such special memories of creating them the first time and enjoying them with my loved ones. I build so many of the boards in this book on a regular basis for our family meals, when entertaining friends and, of course, for every holiday! If I had to pick some favorites that we build and enjoy the most often it would be:

Pancake Board – our family has a weekend tradition of enjoying a beautiful Pancake Board together. It’s one of those boards that I know my kids will remember and hopefully continue the tradition with their families someday.

A pancake breakfast board.

S’mores Board – there are so many fun ways to build and enjoy this board! We recreate it all the time for a sweet ending to the weekend or with friends on a Saturday night! It’s one of those boards you can go big with for a crowd or keep it super simple and small for a memorable dessert with the family on a Sunday evening!

A s'mores board.

Classic Charcuterie and Cheese Board – I’ll never get bored serving this board! It’s one of the most enjoyable experiences to build and graze on with friends and family. It’s such a great way to start any gathering and everyone truly enjoys the experience of getting to try the different combinations of meats, cheeses and accompaniments that I arrange on the board.

A classic cheese and charcuterie board.

Most Re-created Boards

So many of the boards I created for Beautiful Boards have gone viral over the years and inspired people all over the world to recreate them. It makes me so happy to see when people recreate these boards and make them their own.

Candy Cane Caprese. The easiest board in the book to recreate and one that is sure to WOW! your holiday crowd!

Pumpkin Snack Board. This is one of those boards that is easy to build and everyone loves it! It such a fun activity to build with the family and is sure to become an annual tradition after building and enjoying it the first time.

American Flag Snack – this was one of the first shaped themed boards I created that really took off and has been recreated by so many people for patriotic holidays over the years. I created this board on a whim back in July 2018 as I was wanting to serve something festive for the 4th of July and it really got me thinking beyond the classic cheese and charcuterie or meal/snack boards, that I was already regularly creating and serving. From there, I just kept thinking of different and fun ways to arrange our foods for specific holidays and themed occasions.

American Flag Cheese Tray.

These Boards Didn’t Make the Cut

  • Baby Reveal Board. We were literally in the middle of taking the pictures for this board and it dawned on me how dumb I was to use brie cheese in the middle of the board since pregnant women are advised against eating soft cheeses like brie. Why didn’t I just put a cute cake in the middle?! That would have been so much better! Oh well, we didn’t find out what we were having before each of our babies were born so I wasn’t too excited about this board anyways!
  • Willy Wonka Board. I love the look and theme of this board! But it was a tricky one to build and find all of the ingredients for so I made the decision not to include it. I wanted all of the boards in Beautiful Boards to be easy to build and the ingredients to be accessible for most. It’s super cute inspiration though for all the Wonka lovers out there!

It’s All on The ‘Gram

I’m so thankful for Instagram. It’s been such an amazing platform for me to share my board creations, inspire others to recreate them, and connect with a community of people that love serving food boards over the years.

The positive response over the years has encouraged me to continue and get even more creative with my concepts. I recognize and appreciate that if I wouldn’t have started sharing my food board creations on Instagram all those years ago, I wouldn’t be where I am today. And I certainly wouldn’t have been connected with my amazing publisher who reached out to me via Instagram after following me and loving what I was sharing.

Just browsing through the hashtag #boardsbythebakermama fills me with so much gratitude that I have a platform to share this passion and creativity of mine and so much pride in the community that we have built over the years creating delicious memories with these boards that we’ll all cherish forever.

Here are some memorable milestones we shared together on Instagram:

  • First boards I shared in February 2014 and April 2014. I started building boards when we lived in Boston (2009-2011) when my dad really got into woodworking and would mail us his new wood board creations. We would host all of our business school friends and I would use them to serve appetizers and treats. I really got into building charcuterie and cheese boards in 2012. Right after we had the twins, we started doing these fun little “date nights in.” And we would always start with a little charcuterie and cheese board. My passion for building and serving boards blossomed from there. I got more and more creative with everything you could serve on a board and how to arrange it to make the occasion even more special and delicious. I was definitely at the very beginning of the creative food boards movement. And all these years later, I still love building boards, serving boards, sharing board building inspiration and seeing how much people enjoy them!

Boards by The BakerMama

My love for building boards, of course, led to this cookbook, Beautiful Boards, but it also led to a wood board business which led to my Signature Board!

In November 2019, after years of my followers asking me where I got my boards, I started Boards by The BakerMama with my dad’s beautiful handcrafted wood boards and signed copies of my cookbooks. We then introduced The Signature Board in December 2020 and it’s been our best-seller to date. These boards go perfectly with my board building favorites, to build these unique and delicious creations.

A Brilliant Bites Cookbook Q&A with Author, Maegan Brown

Q: What inspired you to write Brilliant Bites?

All of my cookbooks, including Brilliant Bites, came out of my love for hosting and my obsession with making food fun and approachable for everyone. I’ve always believed that food should be as much about the experience as it is about the taste and bite-sized dishes are just perfect for that. Whether it’s a casual get-together or a fancy celebration, there’s something so appealing about small, shareable bites. I wanted to create a cookbook that gave people the tools to wow their guests without the stress of complicated recipes. It’s all about making entertaining easy, delicious and fun!

Q: How is Brilliant Bites different from your previous cookbooks?

My first two cookbooks, Beautiful Boards and Spectacular Spreads, focused on a theme or specific occasion and each concept could feed a crowd. Brilliant Bites is all about the magic of small, snackable dishes that can be enjoyed in a bite or two. I wanted to hone in on appetizers and little dishes that taste incredible, but are easy to make and serve. The recipes in Brilliant Bites are designed to be versatile too. You can mix and match them for any occasion to feed a crowd or you can make just one recipe from the cookbook to completely satisfy. This cookbook, like Beautiful Boards and Spectacular Spreads, is also focused on presentation because, let’s face it, when food looks cute and bite-sized, it’s even more fun to eat!

Q: What are your favorite recipes from Brilliant Bites?

Oh, that’s such a hard question! It’s like picking a favorite child! But if I had to choose, I’d say the Bow-Tie Antipasto Bites (page 85) are a personal favorite. There’s something so satisfying about fresh cheese, meat, olives and pasta all in one bite. I also love the Cacio’ e Pepe Bites (page 22) as they’re always a hit at parties. And for something a little sweet, the Coconut Key Lime Pie Bites (page 161) have become a go-to dessert that everyone loves!

Cookbook author Maegan Brown presenting her cookbook, Brilliant Bites and a recipe.

Q. What’s been the feedback from readers after one year of Brilliant Bites?

It’s been such a joy hearing from readers! People love how approachable the recipes are, and I’ve gotten so many messages from people saying how much their families and guests raved about the bites they served. It’s exactly what I hoped for when I created this cookbook, making entertaining easier and more enjoyable. One follower told me she hosted her first party ever using just recipes from Brilliant Bites, and it was a huge success! That made me so so happy. If you own a copy and have a moment to leave a review on Amazon, that would be amazing! It’s so helpful for people to read how others are enjoying my cookbooks.

Q: What was the most challenging part of creating Brilliant Bites?

The biggest challenge was probably narrowing down the recipes! There are just so many fun ideas in my brain, especially when it comes to bite-sized foods, and I had to make tough decisions about which ones to focus on and include. I wanted to make sure every recipe was something that people could easily replicate but would still have that “wow” factor. Testing each recipe over and over again to make sure they were perfect took a lot of my energy and time, but it was so worth it in the end.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Brilliant Bites

What to keep in mind when preparing bite-sized foods

It’s all about size, taste and presentation. You want it to be love at first sight and bite! As I was developing each recipe for Brilliant Bites, my goal was to create each bite to feel like a mini experience, where you get a little bit of everything, from crunch to creaminess or salt to sweetness and maybe even a little spice, I took the textures and flavors into account for each bite so they would exceed your expectations.

And, of course, visually I wanted them to be exciting! When you’re serving bite-sized dishes, the way you display them can make a big impact. I always say, “We eat with our eyes first, so make it pretty!”

Tips for hosting parties using recipes from Brilliant Bites

The biggest tip I can give is to plan ahead. A lot of the recipes in Brilliant Bites can be made in advance, so you’re not scrambling in the kitchen right before your guests arrive. I also recommend creating a variety of bites with different flavors – savory, sweet, spicy – so there’s something for everyone.

And don’t forget the presentation! Use different serving platters, trays, and even tiered stands to create height and interest on your table. It makes everything look so much more exciting and inviting.

Cookbook author Maegan Brown presenting her cookbook, Brilliant Bites and a recipe.

Adapting the recipes in Brilliant Bites for dietary restrictions

I’m a big believer in making recipes that can hopefully work for everyone. Many of my recipes can easily be adapted to be gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, or even vegan. For example, you can swap out regular flour for a gluten-free option or use an alternative nut butter in place of peanut butter, or even an egg substitute in place of eggs in certain dishes.

I always try to offer suggestions for substitutions, but feel free to get creative and make the recipes your own! Or reach out to me and I’ll give you suggestions to adapt the recipe or recommend a similar recipe that will hopefully meet your needs.

Go-to ingredients when making bite-sized dishes

I think at this point I can turn about any ingredients I have on hand into a fun bite-sized appetizer or treat. It’s so fun to miniaturize our favorite dishes and everyday snacks.

I always have cheese and cream cheese in the refrigerator and usually incorporate it into a lot of bites and I try to keep convenient ingredients like refrigerated crescent dough, prepared pie crusts, crackers, and tortillas on hand to easily create several of the bites in Brilliant Bites.

I’m inspired by everything – special occasions, holidays, restaurants, travel, seasonal ingredients, family traditions, and even just strolling through the grocery store. Sometimes I’ll see a particular ingredient, and I’ll immediately start thinking about how to turn it into a fun recipe.

I also get a lot of inspiration from my followers! They’ll tell me what they love or which recipe they’re enjoying most or they have a question about adapting a recipe, and that sparks new ideas. I’m always experimenting in the kitchen and sometimes the best recipes come from happy accidents!

How do you stay inspired and avoid recipe burnout?

I think it’s important to always keep dreaming and trying new things. Whether it’s cooking with a new ingredient, trying something different at a restaurant, buying new products at the store, experimenting with a new kitchen gadget, or just staying curious with my cravings, it keeps creative energy alive.

As much as the kitchen is my happy place, I try to recognize when I need a break. Sometimes, stepping away from the kitchen for a bit and coming back with fresh eyes is all I need to get inspired again. I love testing new recipes on my family and friends and having honest taste testers in the house keeps me motivated to try different ideas and perfect them until they get rave reviews. And, of course, connecting with my followers and fellow food bloggers keeps me motivated – knowing that what I create inspires others and helps bring people together is the best feeling.

Do you have plans for more cookbooks or other projects?

Oh, if you know me, I always have something up my sleeve! As much as I try to take a break, I just can’t shut down this creative brain of mine. While I can’t give away too many details just yet, I can say that I’m definitely working on more ways to bring people together through food. Whether it’s another cookbook, more online resources, or even new ways to help you entertain, I’m always dreaming up the next project or product. So stay tuned! Lots more fun and yum to come!
