Summer is here and that means many delicious fruits and vegetables are in season! Even though asparagus is technically a spring vegetable, we can often find it fresh all summer long. Better yet, it’s one of the most versatile vegetables and can accompany an array of delicious dishes from barbecued meals to Italian cuisine. But before you cook these tasty spears, you need to know how to pick the perfect bundle as well as how to store them to ensure they retain their fresh, delicious flavor. How To Store Asparagus

Now that you’re a pro at picking the perfect spears you need to know how to store asparagus. After all, there is nothing worse than finding soggy spears in your fridge. First, you’ll want to prep the asparagus. Keep the rubber band on do not wash the asparagus because this will speed up their decay. Next, using a cutting board and sharp knife slice off one inch from the end of the stems. Now that they’re prepped you’ll want to store them upright in a jar, glass, or container. Fill the jar with about one inch of cold water first and then place the stems in the jar so that they are standing upright. Essentially you’re storing the asparagus just like fresh flowers.

Finally, loosely cover the asparagus with a plastic bag. This will lock in moisture and keep your asparagus fresh and crisp! The key thing to note here is, the bag needs to be loosely stored on top, you don’t want to secure the bag with a rubber band. Next, place the jar in the fridge and be sure to change the water whenever it gets murky. If you store your asparagus properly they will last for at least four days! Best Substitutes For Yeast When You’re In A Pinch

Active dry yeast is an important ingredient when making homemade bread and other baked goods but when you don’t have it on hand you can use these great substitutes instead!

The post Best Substitutes For Yeast When You’re In A Pinch appeared first on Forkly.

Yeast is an important ingredient in many baked goods such as loaves of bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, donuts, and dinner rolls. It plays an important role that helps the dough to rise and result in the most perfect pillowy, soft texture. But there is nothing worse than building up the motivation to bake bread from scratch only to find out you don’t have any yeast on hand! Or even worse finding out the grocery store is completely sold out! Thankfully, there are a few great substitutes for yeast that you can use when you’re in a pinch! The best part? You likely already have these substitutes on hand! Check out the best yeast substitutes below.

What Is Yeast And How Does Yeast Work

Before we dive into the best substitutes for yeast, it’s important to have a basic understanding of what yeast is and how it works. The biggest thing to remember is that yeast is a living, breathing organism! Active dry yeast is a single-celled fungus that reacts with water and is the reason behind the amazing process that helps a dense ball of dough become a wonderful risen loaf of bread. This process is also known as fermentation.

Yeast works by consuming sugar and expelling carbon dioxide and alcohol as a by-product. This process is what makes bread (as well as other baked treats like biscuits, donuts, and rolls), to rise perfectly. Further, not only does yeast have leavening abilities but it also helps to develop the gluten in the dough and it adds to that delicious bread flavor! So when you find yourself in a pinch check out these awesome substitutes!

Note: Considering that yeast is a living, breathing organism, none of these substitutes will completely replace it. That said, they will provide the closest results possible, making them excellent alternatives to yeast.

Baking Soda And Lemon Juice

Baking soda is a kitchen staple and can act as a great substitute for yeast. That said, you can’t solely use baking soda you’ll need to combine it with an acid such as lemon juice, buttermilk, or equal parts milk and vinegar.

To successfully substitute yeast for baking soda and acid you’ll need to use a 1:1 ratio. For example, if the recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of yeast you’ll want to use 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of an acid. It’s also worth noting that when using this substitute you don’t have to let the dough rise like you would with yeast.

Source: Shutterstock

Baking Powder

Baking Powder is also another great substitute for yeast! When using it in a recipe you can simply replace yeast with equal amounts of baking powder. For example, if the recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of yeast, simply substitute for 2 teaspoons of baking powder.

Unlike baking soda, baking powder is ready to use without any additional ingredients because it already contains an acid in it. Baking powder will react as soon as it’s exposed to liquid and heat which means your baked goods won’t require additional time to rise. This also makes it an excellent ingredient for quick types of bread such as biscuits, cake, pancakes, and cornbread!

Source: Shutterstock

Beaten Egg Whites

If you don’t want to use baking powder you can try using beaten egg whites instead. When you beat eggs you’re adding air to them which helps them act as a leavening agent. You could even add in a splash of club soda or ginger ale to help even further.

Keep in mind this substitute may not work well in traditional bread recipes but instead would be a great swap in recipes for cakes, pancakes, muffins, and the like. Keep in mind, if your recipe already calls for eggs, simply separate the yolks from the whites and add the yolks to the rest of your ingredients. In a separate bowl beat the egg whites with the sugar called for from the recipe until they’re fluffy and airy. Finally, gently fold the beaten eggs into the remaining ingredients. It’s so important to keep as much air as possible — so make sure you don’t overmix!

Self Rising Flour

Self-rising flour isn’t exactly a perfect replacement for yeast per se but it does act as a leavening agent in many baked goods which makes it worth noting. It would be an excellent ingredient to help you make pizza dough, pancakes and other types of quick-breads.

You can substitute all-purpose flour for self-rising flour in most recipes. Just keep in mind that it already contains baking powder and salt so you’ll need to adjust the recipe if it calls for those ingredients separately.

Sourdough Starter

There are several ways to make delicious homemade bread. While the most common method uses storebought active dry yeast, you can also make homemade bread using a sourdough starter. For those that don’t know, a sourdough starter is a fermented dough with wild yeast and lactobacilli bacteria. It’s made from flour and water and contains a slightly tangy flavor due to the natural fermentation process of the yeast.

A sourdough starter works the same way as active dry yeast as it forms bubbles of carbon dioxide in the dough which helps the bread rise. You can use 1 cup (300 grams) of sourdough starter to replace one package of yeast (2 teaspoons). You’ll also be pleased to know that making a sourdough starter from scratch is easier than you may think! All you need is flour, water, and a little bit of patience to make chewy, flavorful, bread right in the comfort of your own home! Check out our easy instructions to make a sourdough starter from scratch.

Grocery shopping can either be a task you want to avoid or peace and quiet “me” time you look forward to. Whether you enjoy it or not it is necessary to make sure we are fueling our bodies-our wallets and waistlines can’t always survive on fast food and eating out. With the vast space of grocery stores these days it is so easy to get sidetracked, from clothing departments to the candy bar aisles we forget the most important task at hand: filling a healthy grocery cart.

Some of us always strive to make healthy choices for ourselves and our families but it can be really hard with all the temptation that is present. So many processed foods have appealing packagings that lure you in and make it hard to say no. I know it isn’t always practicable to only buy fruits and vegetables and lean meats but it is more about balance. We have discovered 12 ways to help you stay on track and build a healthy grocery cart. You’ll want to review these before your next shopping trip!

1. Make A List

One of the easiest ways to make sure you stay on track when going grocery shopping is to make a list. If you write ahead of time your meal plans for the entire week then you are going to have a good idea of what you are going to need. Following, knowing what ingredients you need for your meals will help you not to buy any unnecessary foods. This will help you save money and not let unnecessary food go to waste.

Creating a list will help you stay on track when shopping the grocery aisles because you already know on hand what you need. It will also help you save money so that you don’t buy un-needed grocery items.

2. Don’t Go Hungry

Going to the grocery store on an empty stomach may be the biggest crime you can make when wanting to build a healthy grocery cart. When you are hungry and in a store that contains everything that can solve that, we are bound to make poor decisions. Some of the unhealthiest foods have the prettiest packagings which will obviously guide our eyes right to it.

Generally, when we get home and stuff our faces with any food we have insight, usually immediately afterward we have regret. When you go to the grocery store on a full or satisfied stomach you can let your brain do the shopping instead of your hunger and in turn make smarter choices.

3. Shop The Outer Aisles

The outer aisles contain some of the freshest and nutritionally dense foods. Some of these foods include fresh produce, lean meats, seafood, dairy, baked goods, and nuts in bulk quantities. Generally, the middle aisles contain all the processed foods that contain high contents of sugar, bad fats, sodium, and other poor nutritional values.

When you stick to the outer aisles and adapt to these options you will feel more comfortable buying fresh foods and will in result be less tempted to buy the foods that are bad for you.

4. Shop After Your Workout

Whether your workout is at home or at a gym, whether you like to lift weights or love cardio, working out makes you feel good. There is actual science to back up the feeling you get during and after a workout. When you begin an exercise your body recognizes it as a moment of stress. However, as your heat pressure starts to rise the brain believes you are either fighting or fleeing the enemy (a.k.a the stress). To protect yourself and your brain from stress you release a protein called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, also known as BDNF. This has a reparative and protective element for your memory neurons which basically acts as a reset switch. All the while this is happening you are also releasing endorphins, another chemical used to fight stress. This is why after a workout you feel at ease and eventually happy.

When you shop after working out or performing some form of exercise you can now see why it would be a smart choice. Your mind is clearer and you’re in a good, calm mood ready to tackle the task at hand. If you’re anything like me after a workout I feel on top of the world, and I want to fuel my body that way too. I tend to crave healthy lean and wholesome foods to help make my body feel strong and refueled, and I definitely don’t want to sacrifice all the hard work I just did.

5. Read Labels

Sometimes it is necessary to venture into the middle aisles, maybe you need a bag of oatmeal or crackers for your next dinner party. When you do decide to head into those aisles it’s important to read the labels if you want to stay on track for a healthier grocery cart.

Many boxed and bagged items contain a high volume of sugar, sodium and other unwanted ingredients. It is worth it for you and your family to take the few extra minutes it will take to read the labels. As a general rule of thumb the smaller list of ingredients the better. If it contains ingredients you can’t pronounce, usually, you don’t want to consume them either. However, on occasion, some of the fancy sounding ingredients may be a harmless preservative. When in doubt use your phone and look it up.

6. Create A Rainbow Cart

When you want to create a healthy grocery cart a good rule is to make your cart look like a rainbow. You know, make sure it’s exploding with color. Not only will your grocery cart be beautiful to look at but it will be good for you too. And no that does not mean you can put in a bag of blue Oreos and a package of bright yellow Peeps, those do not count.

If you find your cart is looking dull in color, generally that means you are lacking nutrient dense foods. I say generally because your bag of quinoa doesn’t always look bright and beautiful but is still really good for you. Try and make sure that you have at least 4-6 colors in your cart to ensure you are picking up enough fresh produce to sustain you for the week.

7. Pick The Appropriate Grocery Carrier

When you set out to go grocery shopping you have three options, grab a cart, grab a basket, or don’t grab anything at all. This step is crucial especially if you took the time to make a list prior to visiting the grocery store. If you set out to pick up and buy a week’s worth of groceries for you and your family then a grocery cart will be best for you. You have tons of space and won’t be stressing your arms by trying to juggle everything in a basket.

If you are picking up supplies for one recipe or a meal it is probably best to use a shopping basket. You will have just enough space for those ingredients but not enough room for anything extra. Lastly, if you set out to pick up a bag of milk, a loaf of bread or any single or few items walking into the grocery store solo and using your arms and hands will be best. Picking an appropriate grocery carrier can be crucial to help you stay on track to make healthy choices. If you go in for one item without anything to assist you in carrying your groceries, most likely you will be less tempted to buy 10 bags of chips that are on sale, we weren’t born with more than two arms you know!

8. Frozen Food Over Canned Food

Sometimes there are fresh foods that are not in season, harder to find or maybe they just aren’t financially feasible for you at that time. When that happens we turn to canned or frozen food choices. But it can be hard to know which is the healthier choice. Although both choices offer convenience, they’re readily chopped and ready to use when you have a choice between both always choose frozen.

Frozen vegetables and fruits are the next best choice for fresh when seeking high nutritional value. You only lose about 20% of the nutritional value when purchasing frozen fruits and vegetables. This happens because frozen produce uses fruits and vegetables when they are at their peak, at this stage, they hold the most nutritional value. They are then blanched and then flash frozen. It is best to steam your frozen vegetables as a lot of nutrients will leach into the water, minimal water means fewer nutrients lost. You can also consider drinking the water they were cooked in to obtain optimal nutrients. In contrast, there are times canned vegetables are the only available choice. It is better to choose canned vegetables than to seek other processed foods in their place. When choosing canned vegetables make sure to choose cans that are low in sodium or better yet, sodium-free.

9. Frozen Vegetables, Not Frozen Meals

The convenience of a frozen dinner will probably lure you in especially if you live a busy lifestyle. They attract you with words like healthy, quick and easy, ready-made that all sound attractive but dig deeper and you’ll find what it actually contains might not be the healthiest choice.

A lot of frozen dinners contain high contents of sodium and saturated fats. The convenience just isn’t worth the poor nutrition you may be putting into your body. If your lifestyle needs ready-made meals like waffles in the morning or easy throw in the oven or microwave dinners, then consider meal prepping. Fill your cart with healthy choices and spend an afternoon making meals for the entire week that you can take out of the freezer, pop in the oven and enjoy. You will have the satisfaction and peace of mind knowing exactly what ingredients went into that meal. Make sure to pick up frozen vegetables but leave the frozen meals on the shelves where they belong.

10. Purchase Pre-Cut, Pre-washed Produce

If convenience is what is stopping you from eating fresh fruits or vegetables then you no longer have any excuses. Many grocery stores now offer pre-cut fruits and vegetables. You can even purchase pre-washed lettuce to make salads. If that isn’t convenience then I don’t know what is.

You may have to spend a few extra dollars to purchase pre-cut and ready to eat produce but if that is what encourages you to eat them then it will be well worth the money. If you don’t have the extra funds to purchases pre-cut but still feel like you’re in a rut when it comes to consuming fresh produce then consider prepping it yourself. You can purchase bulk fruits and vegetables and then when you get home to spend some time washing and cutting the produce, place into airtight containers and store in your fridge so they are ready and available to you.

11. Make It Fun

If you regularly shop with children then you can know sometimes shopping has a short time span before you have a screaming child on your hands. To ensure you can stay on track when filling a healthy grocery store try making it fun for them too.

If you have come to the grocery store prepared with a list try making it a scavenger hunt. Give them their own list so they can search for the foods with you, by making it a game they will see the task as more enjoyable. Some grocery stores even offer child-sized grocery carts that your child can push around, they will love that. If you have younger ones come prepared with snacks and or small toys for them that they can play with to help keep them occupied.

12. Don’t Go At Rush Hour

When trying to build a healthy grocery cart it is probably best to avoid the grocery store at its peak times. Wandering the grocery aisles when it is very busy can be frustrating and may make your shopping trip even longer. You should feel at ease and relaxed when grocery shopping so you can use your brain power to make smart food choices.

You should also avoid the grocery store at busy hours because we all know they place these impulse racks in the cash area for a reason. There is also a reason why they are filled with ready-to-eat snacks, because they offer convenience and are generally a low-cost item, no harm right? Wrong. These snacks are usually always processed and high in sugar, like candy bars. Try and get your groceries and make waiting in line a minimal time for less temptation.

Toothpicks are generally made of wood, plastic or metal and were originally used to remove food from your teeth after a meal. Now we use them for many other purposes. Toothpicks can be used for more than just picking hard to get food out of your teeth and checking if you muffins have been thoroughly cooked through or even used to pick up small appetizers. If you think outside the box you can actually discover toothpicks can be used for much more than that.

Cake Decorating

Try using a toothpick the next time you need to write lettering on your cake. By making tiny little imprints you’ll have the perfect tool to guide you so you can avoid some major mistakes.

Impress your family with your stellar cake decorating skills and they’ll wonder how you got your cake so on point.

Frosting Protector

If you need to transport your cake and you don’t have a proper cake carrier, there is no need to run to the store. You will most likely have everything on hand, all you need is plastic wrap and toothpicks.

Place the toothpicks sporadically on your cake and place the plastic wrap over top. The toothpicks prevent the plastic wrap from sticking to your icing all the while helping your cake from drying out. That is a catastrophe I want to avoid!

Ahhh… there is nothing quite as satisfying as cutting into a perfectly ripe avocado, right? When ripe, avocados are not only delicious but creamy and can be enjoyed on their own, tossed into a salad, added to a smoothie, used for avocado toast, or baked in desserts! There really are endless ways to enjoy avocados. But how can you tell if an avocado is ripe? After all, the last thing you want to do it cut open a rock hard avocado. Follow along as we share all the best tips on how to tell if an avocado is ripe, how to ripen them quickly, and how to store them!

How To Tell If An Avocado Is Ripe

Unlike some other fruits, avocados ripen after they have been harvested. An underripe avocado will often be bright green and sometimes will have a smooth-textured skin. As the avocado ripens it will turn dark green to almost black and the skin’s texture may turn bumpy. However, the color and texture will vary from avocado to avocado so it would be best to go by feel too.

To tell if an avocado is ripe, give it a gentle squeeze. It should feel a little bit soft but not mushy. It’s also recommended that you give the more round end a squeeze test because avocados ripen from the stem-end down. If the larger end is slightly soft you’ll know the avocado is ripe all the way through.

What Does A Ripe Avocado Look Like On The Inside?

If you feel pretty confident that the avocado is ripe based on its color and the way it feels then cut it open! A ripe avocado will have a light green flesh and a wonderful creamy texture. That said, a rotten avocado will often have brown or black spots throughout the flesh and can often have a stringy texture. Overripe avocados might not look as pretty or have the best flavor but just like bananas, they are still completely safe to eat.

How Do You Ripen Avocados Quickly?

If you buy a rock-hard avocado at the store sometimes it can feel like an eternity waiting for it to ripen. Luckily there are a few things you can try to ripen avocados quickly. First, you can try placing your unripe avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or a banana for about two or three days. This is because bananas and apples give off a gas called ethylene which can trigger the ripening process.

Other people have had success with placing an avocado in a sunny spot which may help the avocado ripen in just a few days. You can also try this hack to ripen rock-hard avocados on-demand which requires tin foil, a 200 degree Fahrenheit oven, and about 10 minutes of your time.

How To Store Avocados

Now that you know how to tell if an avocado is ripe, you’ll want to know how to properly store them! It’s best to store avocados at room temperature on your counter especially if they are unripe. Sometimes it can take up to four to five days for an avocado to fully ripen.

Once the avocado is ripe, it’s best to store it in the fridge until you’re ready to eat it. This is because the cool temperatures from your fridge will slow down the ripening process and will make them last longer. If you’ve cut the avocado but don’t use all of it you can check out this easy hack that will save your avocado from browning! Summer is officially here and for many, that means an abundance of fresh local fruit is now available! So let’s take advantage of melon season and enjoy fresh, sweet fruit all summer long. Cantaloupes are at their peak flavor generally between June and August but you want to make sure you pick a good one. After all, there’s nothing worse than cutting into a melon only to discover it’s completely bland! But did you know there are a few ways you can tell if you’ve picked a perfectly ripe cantaloupe? Follow along as we uncover how to pick a perfect cantaloupe.

Feel the Cantaloupe

First, you’ll want to feel the cantaloupe. You want to be on the lookout for any mushy/soft spots which indicate rot. A perfect cantaloupe will be firm but not rock-hard. You’ll also want to press the blossom end (opposite of the stem) and you should feel a bit of give. You’ll also want to pay attention to the weight of the cantaloupe. A good melon will feel heavy. Finally, give the melon a tap and listen to the sound it makes. A ripe melon will sound solid while an underripe melon will sound hollow.

Source: Shutterstock

Look the Cantaloupe Over

Now that you’ve felt it, you’ll want to look it over. The color of the rind should be creamy yellow, beige, or sandy gold. If the rind is green this indicates that the melon is unripe. Further, you’ll also want to make sure the webbing appears as raised ridges. If there is a smooth yellowish spot on the rind, this indicates the cantaloupe was resting in the field and can be a great sign that the melon is ripe. Last, you’ll want to look over the stem. It should appear round, smooth, and a bit concave (indented) as this indicates the melon detached from the stem naturally. If any parts of the stem are still attached that usually means the farmer cut the melon too soon.

Source: Shutterstock

Smell the Cantaloupe

Last but not least you’ll want to smell the cantaloupe. The best spot to smell the cantaloupe is the blossom end which again, is the opposite end of the stem. It should smell sweet but a little bit musky which can indicate the melon is perfectly ripe. If it smells bad, it’s clearly not a good melon and if it smells overly sweet or if it has a fermented odor this could indicate that the melon is overripe.

How to Store A Cantaloupe

If you were lucky enough to find a perfectly ripe cantaloupe make sure you put it right in the fridge as soon as you get home. Your melon will stay perfectly ripe for up to five days before eating if it’s kept in the fridge. If you don’t think your melon is quite ready to eat, store it on the counter at room temperature and repeat the above steps until you think it’s ready. One of the most important things to remember is once you cut into a cantaloupe it won’t ripen any further so be sure that it’s ready before slicing the melon!

Now that you’re an expert at picking a perfect cantaloupe check out our guide on how to pick the perfect watermelon!
